Role Title: Project Manager

Location: Norwich/London/Bristol

Role Purpose

As a Project Manager, you are entrusted with ensuring that projects and programs are delivered successfully, meeting all established success criteria and objectives. Your leadership is essential in facilitating effective communication, seamless change deployment, and robust stakeholder engagement, ultimately supporting the adoption and ongoing improvement of project management methodologies.

Key Accountabilities

  • Project/Program Delivery: Lead the delivery and governance of projects, ensuring alignment with business activities and IT architecture. Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as time, cost, quality, scope, risk, and budget throughout the project lifecycle. Define and implement appropriate delivery approaches, and maintain an outcome-focused mindset.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and maintain a stakeholder map, build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and establish clear communication mechanisms. Deliver effective, targeted, and succinct reporting that supports transparency and early risk identification.
  • Change Deployment & Handover: Plan and oversee handover activities, prepare operational teams for new solutions and services, engage with service and release management, and provide post-handover support to ensure performance meets expectations.
  • Solution Adoption: Facilitate business stakeholder impact assessments, support change management initiatives, and encourage feedback to validate solution performance against requirements.
  • Methodology Improvement: Contribute to the ongoing development of project management tools and methodologies, challenge and enhance IT delivery approaches, and share lessons learned with the wider project management community.
  • Lead projects/programs from inception to completion, ensuring all deliverables meet agreed-upon success factors and KPIs.
  • Scope and shape projects to define the best delivery approach.
  • Provide professional project management expertise and consultancy, acting as a true business partner to senior colleagues.
  • Develop integrated plans for stakeholder engagement and set effective governance controls around risk and issue management.
  • Manage budgets, challenge scope and business cases, and submit changes through the appropriate authorization process.
  • Source, monitor, and manage resources, providing corrective supervision as needed.
  • Apply Agile methodologies where appropriate.
  • Provide stakeholders with information for functional impact assessments and change management support.
  • Develop communication content for engagement initiatives.
  • Offer post-implementation support to prevent disruption to business as usual.
  • Encourage feedback and test solution performance against requirements.
  • Challenge and improve IT delivery approaches, including estimation, processes, standards, and tools.
  • Continuously enhance project management methodologies.
  • Mentor and consult with other project managers, acting as a role model.
  • Document and share lessons learned, providing briefings on areas of expertise.

Risks & Controls

  • Identify, own, and manage key risks and IT controls using systems such as iCARE or Archer.
  • Remediate issues and actions in a timely manner and maintain appropriate records.
  • Ensure controls are well-designed and operate effectively within Aviva’s risk tolerance.
  • Report and escalate risk and control status as appropriate.
  • Solve problems in line with policy and process, applying technical knowledge to address issues from routine to complex.
  • Support project resources by advising or resolving complex problems.
  • Own issue resolution and escalation according to guidelines.
  • Recommend change based on expertise and analysis of precedent.
  • Adapt personally to change and deliver approved changes within project/program parameters.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with project teams, sponsors, business representatives, and other stakeholders.
  • Facilitate effective working relationships across multi-disciplinary internal teams.
  • Establish and drive collaboration with external subject matter experts and suppliers, especially in multi-vendor environments.

Required Capabilities

  • In-depth business knowledge of processes and products.
  • Ability to quickly understand business and customer needs.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, management, and political awareness.
  • Effective coaching and influencing skills to drive change.
  • Understanding of IT and business strategy.
  • Willingness to experiment with new approaches ("fail fast" mindset).
  • Proven track record of IT and business project delivery, ideally with professional accreditation (e.g., Prince 2).
  • Experience in both line and matrix leadership structures.
