Senior Protection & Control Engineer

📍 UK | Hybrid Working Available 💰 Competitive Salary + Excellent Benefits 🏢 Capula (Part of the EDF Group)

We're looking for a Senior Protection & Control Engineer to join our growing Power Transmission & Distribution team and play a key role in delivering complex Protection & Control solutions for National Grid, DNOs, renewable developers and major energy customers across the UK.

The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a technically strong engineer who enjoys solving complex power system challenges and delivering high-quality engineering solutions throughout the full project lifecycle. You'll be responsible for the design, development, testing and implementation of protection and automation schemes across Transmission and Distribution projects while working closely with Lead Engineers, Project Managers and customers to deliver safe, compliant and innovative solutions.

What You'll Be Doing

Protection & Control Engineering

  • Develop and review Protection & Control designs and technical documentation
  • Produce Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), Key Line Diagrams (KLDs), schematics, calculations and system architectures
  • Prepare Functional Design Specifications and Design Intent Documents
  • Develop relay settings and support protection coordination studies
  • Configure protection relays and automation systems
  • Conduct relay testing, factory acceptance testing and witness testing with clients
  • Ensure compliance with National Grid, DNO, ENA, IEC and BS standards IEC 61850 & Digital Substations
  • Design and implement IEC 61850-based solutions
  • Support substation communication architecture development
  • Apply GOOSE messaging and system integration principles
  • Support SCL file development and system interface design
  • Incorporate OT cyber security requirements into engineering solutions

Project Delivery & Technical Leadership

  • Deliver engineering work packages safely, on time and to budget
  • Provide technical leadership throughout project delivery
  • Support installation, testing and commissioning activities
  • Participate in design reviews, technical workshops and client meetings
  • Assist with risk management, change control and technical governance

What We're Looking For

Essential Experience

  • Significant experience delivering Protection & Control engineering solutions within Transmission and/or Distribution networks
  • Strong understanding of protection philosophies, HV substation systems and protection schemes
  • Experience with numerical relays including GE, Siemens, SEL, Schneider or similar platforms
  • Practical IEC 61850 experience including communications architecture and GOOSE messaging
  • Experience testing Protection & Control systems using industry-standard tools
  • Ability to produce and review high-quality engineering documentation
  • Knowledge of UK industry standards including National Grid, DNO, ENA, IEC and BS requirements
  • Broad project lifecycle experience from concept design through commissioning
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent industry experience)
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites

Desirable

  • Extensive UK Transmission & Distribution experience
  • Advanced IEC 61850 knowledge including SCL files and integration testing
  • Awareness of OT Cyber Security standards such as IEC 62443 and NIS Regulations
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers
  • IEng or CEng status (or working towards professional registration)
  • Experience supporting bids and tender submissions
