About The Role
Join Balfour Beatty and play a key role in delivering the Bramford to Twinstead Network Optimisation (BTNO) project, a nationally significant energy infrastructure scheme in East Anglia. The project forms part of the transformation of the UK's electricity network, helping to unlock future renewable energy capacity and support the country's Net Zero ambitions through major overhead line, underground cable and substation works.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor with a proven track record of managing project costs, maximising value and driving commercial performance throughout the project lifecycle. Working within a high-performing commercial team, you'll take ownership of cost and income management across your area of responsibility, ensuring projects are delivered efficiently, safely and to the highest standards of quality. You'll also play an important role in developing junior commercial professionals, sharing your expertise and supporting the next generation of industry talent.
This is an exciting opportunity for a commercially astute professional who is either a Chartered Member of RICS, ICES or CIOB, or working towards chartership, and who is passionate about delivering complex infrastructure projects that leave a lasting legacy for communities and the UK's energy future.
What you'll be doing
- Managing all commercial and contractual activities within your area of responsibility, ensuring robust cost control and accurate forecasting throughout the project lifecycle.
- Maximising project value while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and delivery performance.
- Preparing, reviewing and negotiating subcontract packages, including procurement, payments, variations and final accounts.
- Monitoring project costs, identifying commercial risks and opportunities, and implementing strategies to protect and improve project margins.
- Producing timely cost reports, cash flow forecasts and commercial performance updates for senior project stakeholders.
- Supporting the delivery of the BTNO project, a major National Grid infrastructure programme involving overhead line, underground cable and substation works in East Anglia.
- Building strong relationships with clients, supply chain partners and operational teams to drive collaborative project success.
- Leading, mentoring and developing Assistant Quantity Surveyors and other junior commercial team members.
- Providing commercial advice and guidance to project teams, helping to resolve contractual and commercial issues.
- Supporting the Commercial Manager in achieving project objectives while ensuring compliance with company procedures and governance requirements.
- Contributing to the professional development of the wider commercial team, sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues working towards chartership.
- Maintaining your own Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and keeping up to date with industry best practice and commercial standards.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
