The Opportunity

Hill McGlynn are currently working with an established construction contractor who are looking to appoint an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join their commercial team, based from their Waterloo head office.

This is a senior position within the commercial function, reporting directly to the Managing Surveyor, Commercial Director or Operations Director and taking responsibility for the commercial management of projects alongside the development and management of junior members of the team.

The successful candidate will have direct responsibility for a Quantity Surveyor and Trainee Quantity Surveyor, so previous experience managing, mentoring and developing a commercial team is essential. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor looking for greater responsibility and the opportunity to play an important role within an established contractor.

The Role

As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will take responsibility for the commercial management of allocated projects while providing leadership and support to members of the Quantity Surveying team.

Key Responsibilities Will Include

  • Taking commercial responsibility for construction projects from pre-construction through to final account.
  • Reporting to the Managing Surveyor, Commercial Director or Operations Director.
  • Managing, mentoring and developing a Quantity Surveyor and Trainee Quantity Surveyor.
  • Delegating commercial responsibilities and monitoring the performance and development of junior team members.
  • Managing project budgets, forecasts, costs, margins and cash flow.
  • Preparing and submitting valuations and applications for payment.
  • Managing subcontractor procurement, tender analysis and appointments.
  • Managing subcontractor valuations, payments and final accounts.
  • Identifying, pricing and negotiating variations and change.
  • Preparing monthly cost reports and providing accurate commercial forecasts.
  • Reviewing contracts and identifying commercial risks and opportunities.
  • Managing client accounts through to agreement of final account.
  • Working closely with Project Managers, Site Managers and the wider operational team.
  • Attending commercial, client and project meetings.
  • Ensuring robust commercial processes and procedures are followed across projects.
  • Maintaining accurate commercial records and supporting documentation.
  • Developing strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Providing commercial guidance and support to the wider project team.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor who is commercially strong, confident managing their own projects and capable of leading and developing other members of the commercial team.

Previous experience managing a Quantity Surveying or commercial team is essential for this position.

You Will Ideally Have

  • Significant Quantity Surveying experience within the construction industry.
  • Previous experience working at Senior Quantity Surveyor level.
  • Proven experience managing, mentoring and developing Quantity Surveyors or junior commercial staff.
  • Experience taking commercial responsibility for projects from procurement through to final account.
  • Strong knowledge of construction contracts, procurement and subcontractor management.
  • Excellent understanding of valuations, variations, cost reporting, forecasting and final accounts.
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to identify and manage project risks and opportunities.
  • Experience working for a main contractor would be highly advantageous.
  • Strong negotiation and stakeholder-management skills.
  • The ability to provide commercial leadership while remaining hands-on with project delivery.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and decision-making skills.
  • A relevant Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management qualification would be advantageous.
