I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About You
We're looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor with a background in major infrastructure, utilities, energy or civil engineering projects.
You'll ideally have experience working on large-scale projects for a main contractor and be comfortable operating in a commercially demanding environment.
Experience of NEC contracts would be particularly relevant, along with a strong understanding of subcontract management, change control, forecasting and commercial reporting.
Most importantly, we're looking for someone who can operate autonomously, communicate effectively with both commercial and operational teams, and take ownership of their area of the project.
Location & Flexibility
The project has a site office in Elgin, although there is considerable flexibility around where the successful candidate is based.
You could be based in the Central Belt and travel to Elgin around 3 days per week (expenses paid), or potentially work from the contractor's Inverness office if that provides a more practical base.
