Senior Quantity Surveyor – Electricity Networks
Location: Wakefield / Leeds – approximately two days per week
Coverage: Northern England
Salary: (Up to) £75,000 + company car or car allowance + pension
The opportunity
A growing UK power infrastructure contractor is recruiting a Senior Quantity Surveyor for its Northern Networks business.
The company delivers long-term electricity distribution frameworks covering substations, overhead lines, underground cabling, asset replacement, network maintenance, and associated civil engineering.
Its northern portfolio includes a high volume of individual schemes at different stages of delivery, supported by a strong and sustained pipeline of work. The Senior Quantity Surveyor will act as the commercial lead for an operating unit, working directly with the Operations Director and regional delivery teams.
This is a hands-on role for someone comfortable taking ownership of a portfolio, providing clear commercial direction, and maintaining control across multiple live schemes.
The role
You will be responsible for the commercial performance of a regional portfolio from initial instruction through to final account.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing and administering NEC and bespoke framework contracts.
- Producing accurate CVRs, cost forecasts, and monthly commercial reports.
- Preparing and managing quotations, applications, and valuations.
- Ensuring client instructions and orders are in place before work progresses.
- Identifying, recording, and managing contractual change.
- Monitoring cost, value, cash flow, and project performance.
- Managing subcontract procurement, payments, and final accounts.
- Leading client-facing commercial discussions and negotiations.
- Working closely with operations to improve project records and commercial controls.
- Advising delivery teams on contractual risk, entitlement, and recovery.
- Challenging operational decisions where they could affect cost or contractual position.
- Closing out completed schemes and preventing delays to applications, invoicing, and final accounts.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
The role will initially require a high level of independence. As the northern workload continues to grow, there will be scope to support and develop additional commercial staff and progress towards Commercial Manager.

Applications are welcomed from contractor-side Senior Quantity Surveyors with experience across one or more of the following:
- Electricity distribution or transmission.
- DNO frameworks.
- Power, substations, or HV cabling.
- Utilities or water frameworks.
- Civil engineering and infrastructure.
- High-volume maintenance or regional framework contracts.
Direct electricity-network experience would be beneficial, but strong candidates from other regulated utilities or NEC-based infrastructure sectors will also be considered.
You should be able to demonstrate:
- Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts.
- Ownership of CVRs and cost-to-complete forecasting.
- Experience managing multiple projects or work orders concurrently.
- Commercial control from quotation through to final account.
- Confidence dealing directly with clients and operational teams.
- Experience managing subcontractors and supply-chain accounts.
- The ability to identify contractual risk and protect commercial entitlement.
- The confidence to operate independently at Senior Quantity Surveyor level.
