Senior Quantity Surveyor

Location: Glasgow office

Contract: 12 Months Inside IR35 (4-year project)

Hybrid: 3 or 4 days per week in office, the rest from home

Clearance: SC Clearance required before start date

Role Purpose

The Senior Quantity Surveyor is responsible for providing commercial leadership and support across projects, ensuring contractual compliance, effective change management, risk mitigation, and strong commercial performance. The role works closely with project teams, clients, suppliers, and subcontractors to deliver value and maintain governance standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide commercial guidance and support across projects and to Quantity Surveyors where required.
  • Manage commercial activities including change control, compensation events, contractual notices, governance reviews, and contract administration.
  • Support Project Managers on all commercial matters throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, clients, and supply chain partners.
  • Ensure full understanding and compliance with head contract and subcontract terms.
  • Identify, manage, and mitigate commercial and supply chain risks.
  • Develop and implement procurement strategies that meet project objectives, budgets, and timelines.
  • Lead tendering activities, including evaluation and selection of suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Manage subcontract packages, ensuring risks are quantified, contracts are robust, and performance is monitored.
  • Administer subcontractor accounts, including valuations, payments, claims, compensation events, and final accounts.
  • Maintain accurate project records to support audits, variations, and contractual claims.
  • Ensure all contractual notices, insurances, warranties, and governance approvals are managed effectively.
  • Promote commercial best practice, coaching project teams and supporting commercial awareness across the business.
  • Escalate significant commercial issues and recommend practical solutions.

Key Accountabilities:

Change Management

  • Manage compensation events, variations, early warning notices, progress claims, and contractual notices.
  • Maintain change management registers and systems (e.g. CEMAR).
  • Monitor KPIs, risk reduction actions, and disallowed costs.

Supplier & Subcontractor Management

  • Evaluate, negotiate, and manage subcontractor claims and variations.
  • Manage payment applications, certifications, programme performance, correspondence, and final accounts.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations, warranties, defects management, and insurance requirements.

Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure all commercial activities comply with company procedures and delegated authority requirements.
  • Support governance approvals for new opportunities, contract amendments, and project variations.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying or Building Services Quantity Surveying.
  • Significant Quantity Surveying experience within engineering, construction, or infrastructure environments.
  • Strong commercial and contract management experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of NEC contracts and change management processes.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Proven ability to deliver commercial strategy and support complex contracts and bids.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills.
  • Experience identifying and managing commercial risk.

Desirable

  • Experience working across multiple business units and sharing commercial best practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide proactive commercial advice and support to wider project teams.
