About The Role
Join Balfour Beatty's Regional Civils division and play a key role in delivering one of the UK's most significant decarbonisation projects. As a Senior Quantity Surveyor, you'll be part of the team delivering works on the landmark Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project, an industry-leading development that aims to kick-start the decarbonisation of the Teesside industrial cluster and help create the UK's first zero-carbon industrial cluster.
Working within our UKCS Regional Civils business, you'll contribute to the successful delivery of a complex programme of industrial infrastructure, including sub-stations, control rooms, storage facilities, welfare and laboratory buildings, and water treatment plants. The wider project comprises a large-scale power generation plant with an advanced post-combustion carbon capture system, placing NZT at the forefront of sustainable energy infrastructure and innovation.
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor with a strong background in commercial management, change control and administration of compensation events to apply their expertise on a nationally significant project. Working as part of Balfour Beatty's Regional Civils division, you'll be instrumental in managing project change, maximising commercial opportunities, and ensuring robust commercial governance across a complex and technically challenging programme of works, while helping to deliver infrastructure that will support the UK's journey towards a lower-carbon future.
What you'll be doing
- Managing all commercial and contractual aspects of designated work packages, ensuring effective cost control from initial estimates through to final account settlement.
- Supporting the Commercial Manager/MQS in the successful delivery of the Net Zero Teesside project, maintaining commercial governance and ensuring compliance with contractual requirements.
- Taking a lead role in the management of client change, identifying, pricing, negotiating and securing agreement of compensation events in a timely manner.
- Ensuring contract adherence across the project, proactively managing commercial risks and opportunities to protect and enhance project performance.
- Producing robust valuations, forecasts, cost reports and commercial submissions to support effective decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.
- Minimising project costs while maximising value for money, ensuring the required standards, quality and project objectives are achieved.
- Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with project teams, clients, supply chain partners and key stakeholders to drive successful commercial outcomes.
- Managing subcontractor procurement, administration and account management, ensuring contractual obligations are met and commercial performance is maximised.
- Providing commercial support to project delivery teams, offering expert advice on contractual matters, change control and cost management.
- Leading, managing and developing less experienced members of the commercial team, providing day-to-day guidance, support and technical expertise.
- Mentoring and coaching Assistant Quantity Surveyors and Quantity Surveyors in their professional development, including supporting their journey towards chartership and professional qualifications.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of commercial processes, helping to drive best practice across Balfour Beatty's Regional Civils division.
- Ensuring accurate records are maintained to support commercial reporting, change management and the successful agreement of final accounts.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
