Senior Quantity Surveyor

The Opportunity
We are recruiting for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join an established civil engineering contractor delivering a major, long-term infrastructure renewal programme in West Cumbria.
This is an excellent opportunity to become involved in a significant programme of civil engineering works, covering roads, rail infrastructure, bridges, utilities, and major structural upgrades. Projects typically range up to £10m, with larger schemes valued between £10m and £30m. The wider programme is expected to run for approximately 8–15 years, offering excellent long-term career prospects.
The successful candidate will take responsibility for the commercial management of assigned work packages, working closely with the Commercial Manager, project delivery teams, subcontractors, and client representatives.
The Role
As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for managing the commercial and contractual aspects of civil engineering and infrastructure projects, ensuring effective cost control, contract administration, and commercial performance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing the commercial and cost management activities of assigned civil engineering work packages.
- Preparing and maintaining project budgets, cost forecasts, cash flow reports, and commercial reporting.
- Administering NEC contracts, including compensation events, early warnings, and change control.
- Managing interim valuations, applications for payment, and final accounts.
- Identifying and managing commercial risks and opportunities throughout project delivery.
- Managing subcontractor procurement, tender evaluations, negotiations, and appointments.
- Overseeing subcontractor accounts, payments, variations, and commercial performance.
- Ensuring accurate records are maintained for contractual changes, claims, and compensation events.
- Working closely with engineering, planning, and project controls teams to manage cost, programme, and scope changes.
- Supporting the development and maintenance of project cost baselines.
- Preparing detailed commercial reports for senior management and clients.
- Supporting the Commercial Manager with contractual claims, disputes, and commercial negotiations.
- Ensuring commercial procedures, governance, and contractual obligations are followed.
- Providing commercial advice and support to project delivery teams.
- Supporting and mentoring Quantity Surveyors, Assistant Quantity Surveyors, and junior commercial staff.

Requirements
- Previous experience as a Senior Quantity Surveyor or experienced Quantity Surveyor within civil engineering or infrastructure.
- Strong background in managing commercial packages on civil engineering projects, ideally including highways, rail, bridges, structures, utilities, or heavy civils.
- Strong working knowledge of NEC3 / NEC4 contracts.
- Experience managing compensation events, change control, and contractual administration.
- Experience preparing cost forecasts, budgets, valuations, and final accounts.
- Strong subcontractor procurement and commercial management experience.
- Good understanding of construction methodologies and project delivery.
- Experience identifying and managing commercial risks and opportunities.
- Strong commercial awareness and contractual knowledge.
- Experience producing detailed commercial reports and cost forecasts.
- Ability to work closely with project managers, engineers, planners, and client representatives.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.
- Previous experience supporting or mentoring junior Quantity Surveyors.
- Ability to obtain UK Security Check (SC) clearance, or already hold the appropriate clearance.

Experience working within nuclear or other highly regulated environments would be advantageous, although candidates with strong civil engineering and infrastructure backgrounds will also be considered.
