About the Business Unit
The Energy Unit supports global repowering and new build programmes across hydropower, nuclear, renewable generation, transmission and distribution. We deliver integrated engineering and project management throughout the entire project lifecycle—from concept design to decommissioning.
We’re playing a critical role in the energy transition, partnering with clients to meet New Build, SMR, and decommissioning challenges—balancing technical rigour with regulatory compliance.
The Role: Radioactive Waste Consultant
Join our growing Nuclear; Defence and Civil division as a Radioactive Waste Consultant. You’ll shape policy recommendations, project execution and client strategy, applying your depth of knowledge in nuclear and environmental regulation.
In this角色, you’ll:
- Drive technical excellence: Advise on radioactive waste characterisation, treatment, storage, and shipping while addressing liquid and gaseous discharges.
- Create critical documentation: Write technical reports (Waste Strategies, BAT studies, regulatory assessments) and data-driven analytical work (visualisations, sampling plans).
- Engage with clients: Work alongside department heads and project teams to deliver safe, economically viable, sustainable solutions.
- Develop safeguarding programmes: Support winning bids (e.g., project development), oversee IPR and Safety Case work, and advise Councils and Defra.
- Travel and collaborate: Attend site visits, client meetings (UK/EU), and supplier/factory visits, cultural up-skilling abroad.

Key Responsibilities & Deliverables
- Radioactive Waste Advisory: Evaluate and recommend best practices for characterisation, treatment, and transfer of hazardous wastes.
- Regulatory Compliance: Advise on align standards (PPA, Porton reports, codes of practice) across UK & EU frameworks.
- Technical/Data-Driven Reports:
- Waste Strategies and Icons (upstream downstream lifetimes).
- Waste/Q Nuclear Harmonization Harmonisation Plans.
- ADMS Radiological UK (ORIRL Audit Model, RPP2, PTXI Offsite Consequences).
- BAT/Divert IRAT2 and GenDA optimisation reports.
- Client/Project Delivery: Tender/market development; client-facing presentations; stakeholder consultation.
- Code Compliance & Safety: Lead DC CofC assessments and Interface Risk Assessments for routine operations and site诗经ll-exposure emissions.
- Cross-functional Contributions: Collaborate with engineers, designers, negotiators, and project teams.
- Continuing Competence: Maintain and expand your technical skills with industry accredations (or working towards).

Locations & Security Clearance
- Locations: Altrincham, Bristol, London, Glasgow or Derby.
- Positions subject to attaining the appropriate SC/OC qualifications, which may include DBS+UK Government checks.
Candidate Specification
Essential Requirements
- STEM background: Degree (eircular in engineering, physics/chemistry, planning policy, or waste management) or industrial experience meeting professional body standards.
- Technical proficiency: Expert Microsoft Office Suite + experience of Teams/SharePoint/Office 365 for collaboration.
- Regulatory depth:
- Intimate knowledge of UK radioactive waste regulation (e.g., SSPOs, MACCs/policy, DWP-166, WdP standards) and EU waste output (e.g., EPR regulations).
- Hands-on knowledge of transboundary shipping protocols, radioactive waste recycle routes.
- Operational awareness:
- Environmental/safety licensing (e.g., Site Permitting Legislation) & handling LLW (IE/VLL and LLW waste RPA).
- Technical familiarity with radionuclide decay models, IAEA SS-38 standards, cherloul issues.
- Soft skills: Problem-solving, stakeholder management & multi-disciplinary teamwork.
Desirable Experience
- Technical specialisations:
- Expertise in sampling (ions, radionuclides), Class 1 IA safety cases, and optimised dry j–cer volume calculations and categorisation.
- Adoption of new AI/analytical methods (e.g., Stream+, Mott MacDonald’s risk tools) for hydrothermal vent data, risk characterisation and leaching bank models.
- Reporting & compliance:
- Has fore compliance with C&Ds/local licensing (COMAH, Australia Nuclear/UK licensing).
- Worked on GenDA tests, MoT provisions, CNL oversight standards, site decommissioning plans ISPs.
- Software proficiency:
- PC CREAM, IRAT2 (NDE), ADMS-UK (emission dynamic models & Berkeley dust/surface impediment) or equivalent.
- ERM Beatian, или nature edge, SAFEGUARD Waste FGMJC software suite, TAM Security Tracks/Operations Portal.
- Support roles:
- Managed contractual agreements for storage transport trusts, halitual line arrangements with authorities.
- Wide applicability: In-house health physics & scaling knowledge at trading operations.
