Role Overview

We’re seeking an experienced Senior Rail Operations Consultant to join our dynamic team, working across global projects in rail operations. From Northern Powerhouse Rail and East West Rail to light rail initiatives in the United States and rebuilding Ireland’s rail network, we collaborate globally to enhance rail services.

As a Senior Rail Operations Consultant, you’ll:

  • Work across the Mott MacDonald network, supporting clients in the UK and internationally
  • Deliver projects spanning modelling, train planning, and operational integration.
  • Contribute to timetable production, capacity analysis, and performance modelling.
  • Support consulting engagements with tools like RailSys, ATTUne, ATTSS, and TPS.
  • Collaborate with engineering design teams to deliver operationally feasible projects.

This role offers opportunities to:

  • Contribute to client-facing proposals while expanding our business development.
  • Drive team growth by supporting high-value winning bids.

Candidate Specification

Essential Requirements

  • Expertise in:
    • Rail operational planning
    • Timetable production
    • Capacity analysis
    • Performance modelling
  • Hands-on experience with all three RailSys modules (Infrastructure, Timetable, Evaluation).
  • Advanced analytical skills to interpret complex data and guide evidence-based decision-making.
  • Knowledge of train planning software tools, including ATTUne, TPS (or comparable tools).
  • Strong written and presentation skills; ability to communicate technical results clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven experience engaging with rail stakeholders and clients at all levels.

Desirable Qualities

  • Proficiency in other rail operations modelling tools, such as Treno, OpenTrack, or RTC.
  • Experience with rolling stock planning; expertise in train crew strategies or diagramming.
  • Strategic rail operations knowledge (e.g., conceptual operational frameworks, network operating procedures, crew planning).
  • Exposure to multiple transport modes, including:
    • Metro
    • Light rail
    • Tramtrain systems
  • Diversity of international experience, particularly in:
    • Republic of Ireland
    • North America
    • Australasia
    • Middle East

HR Considerations

UK Immigration Clarification: Mott MacDonald is not currently sponsoring visas under the Skilled Worker visa route.
