Senior Regulatory Compliance Engineer

Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Regulatory Compliance Engineer to lead and support the conformity assessment and regulatory compliance of our advanced laser products. This is a highly visible role that sits at the intersection of engineering, product development, and regulatory affairs, ensuring our products meet applicable UK, European, and international standards for electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
Working across the full product lifecycle, you will provide technical compliance expertise from concept and design through certification, production release, and ongoing product sustainment. You'll collaborate closely with engineering teams, certification bodies, and external test laboratories to ensure products are successfully approved and maintained in compliance throughout their lifecycle.
This role is ideally suited to an experienced compliance engineer, test engineer, or product development engineer who has developed a strong understanding of regulatory standards, product certification, and compliance testing within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead regulatory compliance activities for new and existing laser products, ensuring alignment with applicable UK, European, and international standards.
- Maintain technical compliance documentation, certifications, declarations, and regulatory records to support product approvals and market access.
- Develop and implement compliance plans, risk assessments, and regulatory strategies throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Coordinate and manage product testing activities at external test laboratories, ensuring successful completion of certification and approval processes.
- Review electrical, mechanical, thermal, and system-level designs to identify compliance risks and ensure adherence to relevant standards.
- Provide technical guidance and support to engineering teams during product development, helping to embed compliance considerations early in the design process.
- Investigate compliance-related issues, test failures, production concerns, and field reports, driving effective corrective and preventative actions.
- Support production and quality teams with regulatory queries, safety testing requirements, and ongoing compliance activities.
- Act as a key technical liaison with certification bodies, external laboratories, customers, and internal stakeholders.

Required Experience & Knowledge
- Experience in a regulatory compliance, product certification, test engineering, or product development role within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of CE and UKCA marking requirements, including compliance with EMC, Low Voltage Directive (LVD), and RoHS regulations.
- Hands-on experience supporting product testing, pre-compliance activities, fault finding, and regulatory certification programmes.
- Experience managing and maintaining Technical Construction Files (TCFs) and compliance documentation.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly to engineers, stakeholders, customers, and certification bodies.
- Degree-qualified, or equivalent experience, in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, or a related Engineering discipline.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
Technical Expertise
- Strong working knowledge of IEC/EN 61010-1 or comparable electrical safety standards, including:
- Means of Protection (MOP)
- Creepage and clearance requirements
- Protective earthing
- Insulation coordination
- Fault condition analysis
- Strong understanding of IEC/EN 61326-1 or comparable EMC standards, including:
- Radiated and conducted emissions
- Radiated and conducted immunity
- Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
- Electrical Fast Transients (EFT)
- Surge testing
- RF immunity
Desirable
- Previous experience working within an accredited test laboratory or certification body.
- Experience supporting highly regulated products in industrial, scientific, medical, photonics, or electronics sectors.
- Familiarity with international product approval processes and global regulatory requirements.
- Experience supporting compliance activities across a diverse product portfolio.
