The Reinsurance and Business Accounting teams operate within the International Finance function. We are focused on minimising aged debt and maximising Markel’s multi-billion-dollar reinsurance asset. Our work ensures the business extracts full value from its reinsurance spend, whilst providing balance sheet certainty and generating strong cash flow.

What you’ll be doing

  • Create reinsurance risks in core systems, ensuring policy terms and system functionality drivers are accurately recorded and maintained.
  • Ensure all reinsurance premiums, commissions and expenses are correctly calculated, booked, advised and settled under Contractual Terms.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate calculation and issuance of reinsurance recoveries in respect of paid claims and outstanding reserves, responding to all reinsurer queries in line with key performance indicators. Accurately record all reinsurance recoveries in core systems.
  • Develop strong relationships with key internal and external parties, to expedite the receipt of reinsurance funds and reduce dispute risk.
  • Support the Actuarial and Finance teams in relation to reserving and financial reporting. Address questions promptly and provide valuable insights and data analytics.
  • Lead and challenge on process improvement, ensuring accuracy and automation, inspiring change within the team and with upstream collaborators.
  • Satisfy all internal and external reporting requirements, in accordance with imposed deadlines.
  • Flag material issues on a timely basis and monitor through to resolution.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the reinsurance process and internal controls which are in place to support it, including, but not limited to Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX). Ensure all controls are followed.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
