The Role

We’re looking for either a Research Associate or a Senior Research Associate to join us.

The primary purpose of the role is to conduct internationally leading research in language modelling, and will be part of the Institute’s Fundamental Research (FR) strategic priority area. The role will contribute to the development of sovereign language modelling capabilities - spanning the training, adaptation, fine-tuning, distillation and evaluation of models - that strengthen the UK’s national resilience, security and public value. You’ll be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team of researchers and research engineers, and will be expected to engage with internal and external stakeholders and collaborators to support delivery of ambitious research.

About You

This ideal candidate will hold a PHD (or equivalent experience/qualifications) in an area relevant to this role. They will be able to nurture high-quality research through all stages of development through to delivery to actively contribute to the aims of the Fundamental Research area.

The successful candidate will have experience in developing software codes and libraries as well as the ability to present complex technical information to a variety of stakeholders. They will be comfortable taking the lead on research, while also being a collaborative worker in a multidisciplinary environment to support the delivery of the ambitious research programme. We want to hear from those who have excellent written and verbal communication skills proven by high-quality publications in a relevant field.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
