About the Role:
Responsible for providing technical risk engineering excellence to support Construction underwriting colleagues. The Senior Construction Risk Engineer performs management of key accounts, field activities and support of new business opportunities across the UK Construction book.
The role will require planning, organising, analysis and evaluation of risks, regardless of complexity across a wide breadth of construction and infrastructure projects, both on a desk review basis and through on-site risk engineering activities. Central to the role is to maintain awareness of emerging risks to enable clients to manage their exposures through creation of risk guidance, innovative risk solutions, and client engagement to support the strategic ambitions of the business.
About the Department & Team:
The Liberty Risk Services team provides support to our underwriting teams, strategic brokers and insured clients through effective risk identification, mitigation and improvement. The team delivers tangible benefits in risk engineering services through industry experience, market knowledge and a sector-specific value proposition.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supports the business to achieve continued profitability, growth and operational efficiencies across the Construction portfolio through risk engineering appraisals, surveys and in-person risk advice.
- Manages a list of Key Accounts through the provision of effective risk engineering servicing plans, annual stewardship reports, attendance at claims meetings and renewal presentations.
- Plans, organises and performs a wide scope of desk-based risk appraisals for UK Construction projects to provide risk quality information to Underwriters.
- Performs on-site risk survey activities across construction sites and projects to provide guidance, risk improvement recommendations and risk quality appraisal.
- Represents Liberty on industry-relevant external technical committees and working groups.
- Appraises risks by preparing a project, methodology and works description; assessing the design, construction methodology, sequencing and temporary works; evaluating hazards and the adequacy of mitigation measures; reviewing contractor management systems, procedures and site protections; and preparing loss estimate calculations.
- Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of the assigned lines of business including construction methods and technology, loss prevention, geotechnical, structural and other related issues that may impact underwriting decision-making.
- Actively pursues professional development to maintain and grow knowledge in industry-relevant areas.
- Develops internal Risk Engineering technical guides and standards as well as collaborative input for technical Underwriting guides.
- Assists in the ongoing development of the risk engineering proposition for UK Construction policyholders. This will include developing materials for the Liberty Risk Reduce customer portal, creation of news articles and developing other new material to benefit both Liberty clients and Underwriters.
- Demonstrates consultancy skills across construction including a wide breadth of industry sectors to provide effective management of top tier Key Accounts.
- Maintains professional credibility and consistently demonstrates technical expertise and sound judgement.
- Adheres to all relevant regulatory requirements that form part of the role, and demonstrates behaviours as set out in the Conduct Risk Policy. Skills and Experience:

- Bachelor of Science degree in a technical discipline, such as Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, Mechanical or other engineering is preferred.
- Experience in a construction insurance risk engineering role.
- Extensive knowledge of construction engineering practices, methods and industry trends.
- Major Account Management experience.
- Extensive knowledge of construction standards and codes of practice, including Contractors All Risks (CAR)/Erection All Risks (EAR) exposures and the Joint Code of Practice on Fire Protection and Escape of Water.
- Excellent consultancy and communication skills with particular emphasis on collaboration with clients, brokers, underwriters, and third-party vendors.
