Job Description
Overview
AtkinsRéalis is one of the UK's leading engineering and consultancy organisations, supporting complex programmes across Defence, Aerospace, Nuclear and other highly regulated sectors. As demand for our services grows, we are looking for Senior Safety Engineers to help deliver safety-critical solutions across UK Defence programmes. Previous UK Defence sector experience is essential; experience across Land, Maritime, Air or Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (WOME) domains would be beneficial.
Your role
As a Senior Safety Engineer, you will deliver safety engineering and safety assurance activities across complex and safety-critical UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) programmes. Working in multidisciplinary teams, you will support the development, assurance and delivery of safe, compliant and operationally effective military systems throughout the project lifecycle. You will also help clients apply more efficient, digital approaches to safety processes and outputs, enabling greater focus on safety thinking and decision making.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Leading and supporting the development, maintenance and delivery of Safety Cases and Safety Assessments.
- Managing Hazard Logs and supporting hazard identification, risk assessment and risk management activities.
- Developing safety arguments and evidence to support system acceptance and operation.
- Deriving, allocating and verifying safety requirements throughout the system lifecycle.
- Applying recognised safety analysis techniques, including FHA, PHA, FMECA, FTA and Bow Tie Analysis.
- Supporting safety governance, assurance reviews, audits and independent assurance activities.
- Providing safety engineering guidance to systems, software, hardware and integration teams.
- Engaging with customers, delivery partners, regulators and assurance authorities to support programme objectives.
- Producing clear, robust and well-structured technical reports, safety documentation and client deliverables.
- Supporting business development, capability growth and mentoring of junior safety engineers.
About you
You are an experienced safety professional with a strong background in safety engineering and assurance within complex defence environments. You can apply sound engineering judgement, communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
