The Team

The Med Mal underwriting team is based across our York, London and Colchester offices. The team are responsible for driving the profitable growth across Hiscox UK, in the Allied Healthcare sector.

The team are aligned to our regional development underwriting teams to ensure a seamless service to our brokers, leveraging relationships to support the profitable growth of new and existing business including cross-sell and up-sell.

The Role

Working within our specialist Medical Malpractice (Med Mal) underwriting team, you will play a key role in managing and growing our schemes portfolio. The role will focus on both the oversight of existing schemes business and the development of new scheme opportunities across the healthcare, beauty and wellbeing sector in the UK.

Working closely with both the Med Mal and Schemes teams, you will identify, develop and grow new business opportunities, while maintaining strong relationships with brokers and key stakeholders.

The role can be based in York, London or Colchester. Regular travel between offices and to broker meetings will be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivering exceptional service to our brokers, dealing with referrals and writing more complex business
  • Working with Head of Healthcare, Beauty and Wellbeing and Schemes underwriting team being responsible and accountable for the profitable growth of Schemes
  • Challenging convention on a regular basis, suggesting and executing effective growth and underwriting strategies to ensure sustained profitable growth
  • Keeping abreast of new risks, exposures and regulatory updates within our chosen sectors to ensure Hiscox’s market leading position is maintained
  • Working with the Head of Healthcare, Beauty and Wellbeing to help develop new products and propositions and maximise the opportunity within our current/future portfolios of business
  • As a senior member of the team taking an active role in mentoring and developing more junior members of the team
  • Working with the Head of Healthcare, Beauty and Wellbeing around shaping and driving the underlying underwriting strategy and portfolio of business to deliver our challenging growth ambitions
  • Taking ownership of relationship management and accountability for some of our key strategic broker partners
  • Flexibility to travel regularly as required to support business needs, broker relationships and wider team collaboration

Candidate Profile

  • Strong, relevant Medical Malpractice, Healthcare or Professional Indemnity underwriting experience.
  • Experience of working with schemes business and/or delegated authority arrangements would be advantageous. Experience of writing other Casualty and Property lines of business would be beneficial
  • Ability to make confident underwriting decisions in complex and challenging situations.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with brokers, colleagues and business partners.
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Commercially minded, with the ability to identify and develop new business opportunities.
  • ACII qualified or actively working towards qualification.
  • Ability to work independently whilst contributing positively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrates behaviours aligned to the Hiscox values and culture.
  • Degree qualified and/or holding relevant insurance qualifications would be advantageous; however, equivalent industry experience is equally valued.
