We're a unique department of the University of Cambridge, core funded by Cancer Research UK's charitable activities, and we're eagerly searching for an experienced Senior Scientific Associate to join our Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry Core Facility.
About the Role
The core facility provides technical advice, direction, and service to scientists at all levels of the Institute and external collaborators. The core facility offers a diverse analytical service for the quantification of therapeutic molecules to a wide range of research and clinical based projects and trials (requiring GCP compliance).
The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily maintenance, calibration, and operation of Sciex Triple quadrupole and QTOF instruments (6500, and 6600) and associated UHPLC systems. They will be ensuring mass spectrometry equipment is running optimally, developing quantitative LC-MS/MS based assays together with other members of the core facility team, alongside validating LC-MS/MS based assays to the current OECD M10 guidelines to support clinical trials and providing a metabolomics service to the Institute research groups.
Key Responsibilities
- Act independently to provide sample analysis and LC-MS/MS scientific and technical support, training to other team members and members of research groups including Research Assistants, Postdoctoral Research Associates, Clinical Fellows, and PhD students.
- Ensure the day-to-day running of LC-MS/MS instrumentation.
- Fit for purpose method development.
- GCP regulated and non-regulated sample analysis.
- Metabolomics data analysis, reporting, and instrument maintenance responsibilities to maintain an uninterrupted service.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Qualifications and Experience
The Senior Scientific Associate within the Core Facility is an experienced scientist in both Liquid Chromatography hyphenated to mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) of small molecules/drug compounds, metabolomics, antibody-drug-conjugates (ADC), antibody-oligonucleotide conjugates (AOC), antibody-biopolymer conjugate (ABC), and bioanalysis (e.g. pharmacokinetics, toxicological assessments, and ICH GCP E6 (R3) compliant sample analysis for clinical trials).
Candidates will ideally have a postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline, coupled with advanced scientific and laboratory knowledge in the LC-MS/MS and experience in a GCP regulated environment as Analytical Project Manager. Experience in the analysis of large molecule therapeutics would be advantageous (proteins, mAb & ADCs).
Job Details
We are principally seeking a Grade 7 Senior Scientific Associate, but will consider appointing at Grade 8 Principal Scientific Associate level (£42,254-£56,535) for an exceptionally experienced candidate.
