Job purpose

A senior member of the content delivery team, helping to shape processes, develop our content offering and provide coaching to the team to deliver world-class content for clients.

The senior scientific content writer takes a lead on strategy across key clients and is a role model in the creation of high-quality copywriting across multiple channels to support client marketing goals.

Principal job elements & responsibilities

Strategy

  • Lead the development of strategic, multi-channel content plans based on client goals and target audience
  • Anticipate needs, identify trends, and develop long-term content strategies for clients.
  • Proactively research new developments in the space, industry trends and competitor activities.
  • Identify opportunities for new content or campaigns.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of content strategy frameworks and plans across client accounts
  • Interview SMEs and develop content themes and topics to guide campaigns
  • Review and consider competitor content in the creation of client strategies
  • Regularly review client content strategies and analyse performance to identify and share key learnings
  • Have a strong understanding of a client’s wider marketing objectives and ensure our content supports them
  • Have a strong understanding of clients' businesses, goals, needs, pain points, likes and dislikes, and customers, including the creation and updating of client induction decks
  • Keep up to date with content trends and use this insight to evolve our offering
  • Play a leading role in client content workshops
  • Support with market and client research
  • Contribute to the development of and participate in pitches when required
  • Proactively identify and resolve potential issues, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Team operations

  • Identify, drive and own initiatives that work towards the future vision of the content team and business, including:
    • Areas to upskill the content team and drive performance
    • Process improvements that support the team and company as a whole (including the introduction and use of relevant tools and software) and enable the production of world-class work
    • Opportunities to collaborate across the business to ensure the delivery of world-class work and outcomes for clients
    • Initiatives leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to improve content generation, review and quality control efficiency
    • Initiatives that encourage the dissemination of key data that could help to inform client strategies (such as gathering information from the digital team to help develop content strategies)
  • Take part in training to upskill in non-scientific areas, including digital marketing (e.g., search engine optimisation [SEO], content generation for account-based marketing [ABM], and content strategy)
  • Proactively organise training to upskill other content team members in these areas

People

  • Line management and mentoring of scientific content writers
  • Support the onboarding of freelance writers and act as a point of contact to ensure they have everything they need to complete a task
  • Support junior/new team members in the creation of content strategies
  • Support the business in the development of sector knowledge
  • Develop the content creation skills of more junior team members, including guiding the team on new content formats and their purpose
  • Ongoing coaching and mentoring of team members, including the creation and delivery of training
  • Support the account managers in effectively briefing content writers
  • Playing a key role in the peer review process, assisting with the review of technical/scientific content

Content creation - thought leadership

  • Research topic areas – desk research, review of client’s existing content, competitors and editorial
  • Develop thought leadership angles
  • Write article pitches and abstracts
  • Develop SME questions
  • Interview SMEs
  • Develop content outlines and write content pieces
  • Review existing content and repurpose – changing tone, perspective, structure and angle where needed

Content creation – marketing materials and digital

  • Researching and drafting marketing materials including but not limited to:
    • Brochure content
    • Infographics
    • Newsletters
    • Email marketing copy
    • Corporate presentations
    • Speaker presentations
    • Case studies
    • Video script
  • Researching and drafting blog content (including keyword optimisation)

Skills and experience

  • Experienced B2B copywriter or similar, ideally in the pharma/biotech sectors
  • Strong content strategy ability
  • Leadership skills with a focus on coaching, mentoring and driving performance
  • Creative and versatile writing skills
  • Strong deadline management skills
  • Excellent research skills
  • Flawless proofreading/editing skills
  • Strong cross-channel content strategy development skills
