Senior Scientific Editor, One Earth
Location: London (UK) or Amsterdam (The Netherlands)
About Our Team
We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic scientist or scholar to join the editorial team of One Earth. One Earth is Cell Press’ flagship sustainability journal, publishing impactful research and perspectives across the full spectrum of sustainability science. Our mission is to advance understanding of, and identify solutions to, the major sustainability challenges facing our planet, while breaking down barriers between the natural, social, and applied sciences and the humanities. We welcome applications from candidates with expertise across climate-related disciplines, with particular interest in climate mitigation, adaptation, climate impacts, climate dynamics, and the interactions between climate change and society, ecosystems, health, and sustainable development. The successful candidate will handle all climate-related content published by One Earth. We are open to candidates at different career stages and are committed to building a diverse and inclusive editorial team. Previous editorial experience is advantageous but not required.
About The Role
As a Senior Scientific Editor, you will play a central role in shaping One Earth’s climate content and editorial direction. You will oversee the peer review process for climate-related submissions, engage closely with authors and reviewers, curate and commission compelling content, and build relationships with the wider research and sustainability community through outreach and other activities.
Responsibilities
- Identify, recruit, and develop high-impact content across climate change mitigation, adaptation, impacts, and related areas of sustainability research
- Evaluate submitted manuscripts and manage the peer review process to ensure rigor, fairness, and efficiency
- Select and collaborate with expert reviewers
- Engage closely with authors, providing thoughtful guidance and an excellent author experience
- Commission and edit Reviews, Perspectives, and other front-matter content
- Ideate, pitch, plan, and execute thematic issues that bring together leading review and perspectives on pressing sustainability challenges
- Contribute to the journal’s editorial strategy and its positioning within the Cell Press portfolio
- Build and maintain strong relationships with the global scientific and sustainability community
- Represent the journal at conferences, workshops, and through institutional visits
- Contribute to digital content, including the journal homepage and social media

Requirements
- A PhD, or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline
- Previous editorial experience is preferred
- Broad interest across sustainability research
- Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to evaluate diverse areas of science
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an international team
- Strong interpersonal and networking skills
- Established research networks (preferred, particularly for more senior candidates)
- Interest in scientific publishing, communication, and emerging digital trends

If performed in NLD Amsterdam (Radarweg), the base pay range is €59,300 - €98,800. This job may be subject to a collective labor agreement in the Netherlands. Please consult with the hiring team for further details.
