Job Description

As a Senior Scientist within our Innovation Team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of chemical, explosives and narcotics detection technologies.

Unlike traditional product support roles, this position focuses on early-stage research, technology assessment, prototype evaluation and scientific innovation. You'll help determine which technologies have the potential to become the next generation of Smiths Detection products, working at the intersection of science, engineering and security.

This is an opportunity for a technically strong scientist with leadership capability, commercial awareness and scientific curiosity to influence future technology direction and work on some of the most challenging detection problems in the industry.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Senior Scientist, you will lead scientific investigations and innovation activities from concept through to technical proof of principle.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading scientific work packages and research activities within the Innovation portfolio
  • Designing and executing experiments to answer complex technical questions
  • Developing and evaluating novel detection technologies and concepts
  • Assessing the viability, performance and potential application of emerging technologies
  • Supporting prototype development and technology demonstrators
  • Leading root-cause investigations and scientific problem solving activities
  • Analysing, modelling and interpreting complex datasets
  • Producing high-quality technical reports, presentations and recommendations
  • Presenting findings and influencing decision-making with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Engaging with external collaborators including research organisations, universities, government bodies and technology partners
  • Supporting technology transfer activities as innovation projects mature into product development programmes
  • Representing Smiths Detection at scientific conferences, customer engagements and industry events

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
