With a focus on renewable energy sources, Drax generates dispatchable, renewable power and aims to create a stable and sustainable energy landscape in an increasingly uncertain world. Building on its proud heritage, the company aspires to become a global leader in sustainable biomass and carbon removal solutions. The organization fosters a culture of practical problem-solving, forward-thinking, and collaboration, bringing together teams of dedicated professionals who are passionate about making a meaningful impact on climate change and energy sustainability.

About The Role

The Senior Security Engineer at Drax plays a critical role within the Operations & Project Delivery team, based in Glasgow with a hybrid work pattern. This permanent, full-time position involves supporting the security engineering compliance framework, including NIS (Network and Information Systems) compliance and governance across Drax’s FlexGen estate, which encompasses Hydro and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assets. The role offers an exciting opportunity to influence and deliver the strategic Security Engineering programme, focusing on both innovative solutions and strategic maintenance initiatives tailored to meet security requirements across cyber, physical, and market economics domains. The Senior Security Engineer will be instrumental in implementing security measures, managing vulnerabilities, and ensuring the resilience of critical infrastructure. The role requires regular travel across the UK to various sites within the FlexGen portfolio, providing hands-on support and oversight to maintain security standards and compliance.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in cybersecurity, network engineering, or operational roles within critical national infrastructure or similar sectors. Strong knowledge of network security technologies, including firewalls, VLANs, routing, and security zones, is essential. Familiarity with IEC 62443 standards for security zones and conduits, along with hands-on experience with enterprise and industrial firewalls, will be highly valued. The candidate should possess excellent analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex network diagrams, IP schemes, and security data to inform decision-making. Effective communication skills are vital, enabling the candidate to produce clear reports, procedures, and presentations. A proactive approach to monitoring, vulnerability management, and incident response, combined with the ability to build relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders, will ensure success in this role.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
