About the Company
Our client is a leading AI safety research organisation working at the frontier of AI risk evaluation. They partner with the world's top AI labs to evaluate frontier models before deployment and conduct original research on deceptive alignment, model control, and AI oversight. Their work directly shapes how the most capable AI systems in existence are developed and released.
The team operates from a collaborative London office, shared with a prominent AI safety initiative, and is known for a culture that values truth-seeking, directness, and high-quality work. Security at this organisation exists to maintain the trust of frontier AI lab partners and to enable the research mission.
The Role
This is a first-of-its-kind hire: a Senior Security Engineer who will own security end to end across the organisation. You will report directly to the CEO and sit within the engineering team, working closely with the infrastructure and operations functions. There is no existing team to slot into, you define what good looks like, build the programme from scratch, and drive implementation yourself.
A central part of the role is representing the organisation externally to frontier AI lab partner security teams, becoming a trusted face for security credibility. Internally, you set direction for engineers and operations alike. This suits someone who combines strategic thinking with a hands-on engineering mindset and who wants maximum impact without the overhead of a large security function.

Key Responsibilities
- Build and own the end-to-end security programme, set the roadmap, conduct risk assessments, and evolve the programme as the organisation grows
- Serve as the primary security point of contact for frontier AI lab partners, build relationships with partner CISOs and produce technical documentation demonstrating security posture
- Define AppSec strategy and security principles that the engineering team implements, create paved roads that make the secure path the easy path
- Own the policy framework for AI tool usage, agent integrations, and data governance, decide what is approved, what data can go where, and how new tools get vetted
- Select, implement, and manage the security tooling stack, EDR/MDR, endpoint management, email protection, and identity management, automating wherever possible
- Lead compliance and certification efforts (ISO 27001, SOC 2) as required by partner relationships, treating compliance as a byproduct of good security practice
- Manage Google Workspace, define access policies, and build secure onboarding and offboarding processes across the organisation
- Automate security operations at every opportunity, zero-touch deployments, IaC for security tooling, automated provisioning and deprovisioning
What You'll Need
Essential:
- 7+ years in security engineering, security operations, or a closely related technical security role
- Demonstrable experience building or significantly maturing a security programme
- Track record of earning trust with non-security stakeholders and building buy-in for security practices
- Familiarity with cloud security, AWS IAM, networking, and infrastructure review
- Hands-on experience with compliance frameworks including ISO 27001 and SOC 2
- Practical experience with endpoint management tools (Kandji, Jamf, or equivalent) and identity/access management
- Experience administering Google Workspace or a comparable enterprise identity platform
- Genuine interest in AI safety and the organisation's mission

Desirable / Nice to Have:
- Ability to review infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) and application code (Python) for security issues
- Prior experience as a security point of contact for external partners or customers
- Demonstrated interest in AI safety through prior work, research, or coursework at an AI safety organisation
