Senior Sensory Higher Level Teaching Assistant within Specialist Teaching Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People's Team
Lancashire County Council is seeking to appoint a Senior Sensory HLTA to specifically work with D/deaf children and young people to join the growing Specialist Teaching Service (STS) within the Inclusion Team. The successful candidate will manage 2 Sensory HLTAs working across Lancashire, supporting children and young people who are Deaf or identified with a hearing loss.
The Specialist Teaching Service is a specialist peripatetic teaching service that supports the local Authority and Lancashire Settings and Schools in meeting the needs of children and young people with special educational needs. The team consists of highly qualified and experienced Specialist Teachers (QToDs), Senior and Higher-Level Teaching Assistants, a Deaf Role Model and Sensory Technicians. We work closely with parents and other agencies to support children and young people in a range of settings including at home, early years settings, schools and colleges. From birth we support the youngest children when identified with a hearing loss throughout their transition into post 16 settings.
The role of the Senior Sensory HLTA will consist of:
- Managing a team of HLTAs who provide support in collaboration with the Deaf Role Model and Teachers of Deaf children and young people to support children and young people who are Deaf or identified as having a hearing loss within a range of settings, schools and colleges across Lancashire.
- Under direction from the Team Manager and Teachers, working in partnership with settings, parents and carers, and other relevant professionals and agencies to meet the individual needs of the children and young people. This will involve direct work with pupils for example developing BSL skills / language skills or other specific targeted intervention.
- Identifying and assessing needs and contributing towards setting outcomes as well as contributing to Teacher's reports and Education Health and Care Plan assessment for pupils.
- Using the Deaf Curriculum Framework as a basis for support, including for the planning and implementation of support programs and next steps for individual students in liaison with the specialist teachers
- Managing a caseload effectively as directed and have oversight of the caseloads allocated to the HLTA team and Deaf Role Model
- Using ICT effectively to teach and for maintaining records accurately.
- Travelling to a range of settings within Lancashire and supporting school staff in differentiating lessons and modifying resources to make them accessible to Deaf learners.
- Participating in professional development opportunities, sharing new learning and experiences with colleagues and contributing to the development of the service.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated Senior HLTA's who will contribute to the key work of the Specialist Teaching Service by:
- Having strong moral SEND values with the vision and determination to make a difference
- Being committed to an inclusive approach to education.
- Being accountable for improving outcomes for all children and young people.
- Showing evidence of experience of working with children and young people with a range of special educational needs and ensuring they receive a high-quality educational experience that meets their needs
- Advocating for Deaf children and those identified with a hearing loss, including working collaboratively with their families, staff and settings.
- Being able to advise and support schools, establishing clear actions for all partners, and evaluate the progress being made against these.
- Confidently modelling teaching approaches to setting and school staff appropriate for Deaf children and young people, raising standards for children with SEND.
The successful candidates will have:
- Experience of working within a senior/leadership role ideally in school with proven experience as a Teaching Assistant or Communication Support Worker
- Experience or relevant insight into working with D/deaf pupils.
- Recognised and relevant NVQ Level 3 qualification or equivalent.
- GCSE's grade 4-9 (or equivalent) in English/Literacy and Mathematics/numeracy
- An understanding of deaf learners' needs
- Knowledge and experience of BSL/SSE and total communication approach or willingness to develop skills in these areas
- Good ICT skills and technical confidence to support hearing equipment, including knowledge of cochlear implants, hearing aids and assistive listening device technology.
- The ability to work independently, including organising workload and setting own priorities.
- The ability to work constructively as part of a team, understanding different roles within the service as well as in the classroom and their responsibilities.
- Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding/ child protection.
