Birmingham Children's Trust

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of children and families?

If so, Birmingham Children’s Trust wants you!

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a developing dynamic frontline service within Birmingham Children's Trust.

About us

Ascent (The Complex and Enduring Mental Health Team) is focused on bringing about meaningful change, preventing admission/readmission to secure mental health services, and safeguarding children and young people.

The children and young people we work with have experienced recurring mental health crises and/or acute mental ill health resulting in secure mental health service admission and detention under the Mental Health Act 1983.

The service has developed an effective model of intervention that is embedding Relational, Systemic Principles, and Trauma-Informed Practice along with a broader range of tools and perspectives.

We are committed to working in partnership with children, families, and partner agencies to safeguard; understand the broader mental health issues; and intervene to address social issues impacting on young people's mental health, recovery, and development.

We are looking for forward-thinking senior social work professionals to join our service to safeguard and protect our children and young people in Birmingham.

The work is varied and challenging and encompasses work with children in need to those children in care and everything in between.

We have been rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted, following a 2023 inspection. This is a fantastic achievement for Birmingham Children's Trust, with many positive highlights focusing on areas including the quality of staff leadership, partnership working, safeguarding, and corporate parenting.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
