Senior Software Developer (Java/C++)
Active SC Clearance required
Salary: Up to £78,000 + Excellent Benefits

The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Software Developer to join a highly skilled engineering team delivering complex, high-performance software solutions. This role offers the chance to work on challenging projects, influence technical strategy, and play a key role in the design and development of scalable backend systems.
You'll work with modern technologies across Linux environments, contributing to the full software development lifecycle while collaborating with technical stakeholders and mentoring fellow engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain high-performance backend applications using Java and C++.
- Lead the technical design and implementation of software services, components and APIs.
- Develop robust, secure and scalable software solutions with a strong focus on quality and maintainability.
- Mentor and support junior and mid-level developers within the team.
- Contribute to architectural decisions, technical roadmaps and engineering strategy.
- Conduct code reviews and champion software development best practices.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex software issues and performance bottlenecks.
- Develop RESTful APIs, microservices and distributed applications.
- Utilise debugging, profiling and static analysis tools to maintain high software quality.
- Containerise applications using Docker and contribute to deployment automation.
- Support CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver effective technical solutions.
- Ensure software performance, security and reliability through comprehensive testing and code quality standards.

Skills & Experience Required
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent commercial experience.
- At least 5 years' commercial software development experience using Java and/or C++.
- Strong experience developing within Linux environments.
- Solid understanding of software architecture, design patterns and object-oriented development principles.
- Experience developing enterprise-scale backend systems, APIs and distributed applications.
- Strong knowledge of multithreaded and concurrent programming.
- Experience diagnosing, troubleshooting and optimising software performance.
- Familiarity with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
- Experience with containerisation technologies such as Docker.
- Knowledge of CI/CD tools including Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD or Azure DevOps.
- Strong Git version control experience.
- Experience working within Agile development environments.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management and problem-solving skills.

Due to the nature of the projects involved, successful applicants will be required to meet UK security clearance eligibility requirements. This includes satisfying relevant residency and nationality criteria.
