Senior Java Developer / Lead Software Engineer – Central Government
📍 Remote - UK based
💷 £370 per day - inside IR35
🔐 Must be eligible to undergo BPSS Clearance - see below for requirements
We’re looking for 2x Senior / Lead Java Developers to join a major UK central government department within Health and Disability Services. This is a lead-level role. You will own engineering delivery from design to deployment, provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers, and help shape technical strategy while delivering secure, resilient, user-centred services at scale, including refactoring legacy technical debt.

- Lead design, development and deployment of secure, scalable Java-based services.
- Champion engineering best practice - CI/CD, automated testing and cloud-native development.
- Provide technical leadership, mentor junior / mid-level engineers and lead code reviews.
- Contribute to architecture decisions, evaluating design options and managing trade-offs.
- Work in agile, multi-disciplinary teams with Product, Delivery, UX and DevOps to deliver iteratively.
- Ensure systems are secure, resilient and meet government service standards.
We’re looking for someone with:
- Proven track record leading engineering teams and mentoring engineers - Expert in Java.
- Strong hands-on Java 11 / 17 / 21, Spring Boot, Microservices, REST APIs, Event-Driven Architecture.
- Experience with AWS / Azure / GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform / CloudFormation.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis and CI/CD / automated testing.
- Experience delivering user-centred digital services in agile teams.
- Public sector / central government experience highly desirable.
