Software Engineer - Senior
Do you want to shape the engineering foundations of products that help power everyday life for 8 million people?
Northern Powergrid is investing in a new in-house software engineering team, and we are looking for senior engineers to set its technical standards from day one. As the energy system transforms, we have decided to own our own destiny: designing, building, and owning key digital products ourselves. You will join the newly formed Software Engineering Team at the very start of that journey.
You will design and build modern, cloud-native web and mobile applications and the API layers that bring together business data from across our technology estate, enabling colleagues across the business and integration with partners across the energy industry. Our work spans applications used by our field staff, systems that support engineering and design, improving our customer experience, and planning our network, and the scope will grow substantially as our capability matures into the next regulatory period (ED3).
This is a role for an engineer with real breadth. You will be one of the people the team turns to on complex technical problems, working across the front end, the back end, the APIs, and the cloud rather than specialising narrowly in one of them. You will also work beyond our own walls, with the suppliers and delivery partners who build alongside us and with the wider technical community, and bring what you learn back into how we build.
We are also deliberately building a human-led, AI-accelerated engineering culture. We want experienced engineers who are curious about using AI and emerging agentic tools to reduce friction, explore options, and improve delivery flow, while keeping clear human accountability for design, security, testing, and maintainability. The aim is a practical builder model: engineers close to the problem, empowered by modern tools, and disciplined about quality.
Along with a competitive salary of between £65,000 - £75,000 we also offer:
- Annual leave of 25 days + bank holiday entitlement
- Enrolment into our Pension Scheme, with a generous company contribution (6% employee / 12% employer)
- 15% Performance Bonus
- Excellent career development as a senior founding member of a growing team
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and delivery of services and features: Across a modern stack (React/TypeScript front ends, .NET back ends, with flexibility for the right tool).
- Help deliver mobile applications for our field teams: built with React Native alongside our web stack, so that colleagues working out on the network have tools that work wherever they are.
- Design and build APIs and abstraction layers: Integrate data from a mixed technology estate (.NET, Node.js, SQL Server, Oracle, Databricks, and more), so that our products and our partners can use business data without being coupled to the systems underneath.
- Own quality: Practising and championing test-driven development, automated testing, and CI/CD, so that we can change our systems quickly and safely instead of slowing down as they grow.
- Build and operate containerised services in the cloud: Primarily Azure with some AWS and OCI, so that what we build runs reliably and we stay accountable for it long after release.
- Use modern AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate delivery: Applying professional judgement to review, test, and validate all code regardless of how it was produced, so that we gain the pace without lowering the bar on quality or accountability.
- Help shape practical AI-assisted and agentic engineering patterns for the team: Covering coding, testing, documentation, workflow, and developer experience, so that we adopt these tools deliberately rather than each engineer working it out alone.
- Mentor engineers through code review, pairing, and design discussion: Ensuring the standards we set at the start still hold as the team grows.
- Work with colleagues, suppliers, delivery partners, and our Product and Innovation teams: Turning business problems into well-engineered, pragmatic solutions, so that what we build addresses the real problem rather than the first version of the request.
- Contribute to technical decisions on architecture, tooling, and ways of working: Ensure what we build follows the policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements that apply to us, so that early choices still stand up as the estate grows and we stay compliant as an operator of critical national infrastructure.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
