Job Title
The Opportunity
Veson Nautical builds the systems the world's leading commercial maritime owners, operators, and trading companies run their business on. Within that, VesselsValue produces an independent financial valuation for the global fleet of vessels — every single day — a number clients rely on to buy, sell, finance, and insure ships. You'd be joining Titanic, the team that owns that daily valuation pipeline end-to-end: the models, the partner data feeds behind them, and the APIs and databases that get the results out to clients and the rest of Veson.
Engineering here is changing faster than most job descriptions admit. Our teams have moved past "can AI write this function" and into real agentic workflows: engineers directing coding agents, running several work streams in parallel, and staying accountable for everything that ships. We're not looking for someone who codes fastest. We're looking for a senior engineer who can still do all the things a senior engineer has always needed to do — design well, debug the hard stuff, mentor, own outcomes — and who treats AI agents the way a good tech lead treats a keen but unsupervised junior: useful, fast, and in constant need of context and review.
About the Titanic Team
Titanic looks after Veson's daily vessel valuation product. In practice that splits into three closely connected pieces:
- Valuations — the pricing models and the daily pipeline that runs them across the global fleet.
- Partner integrations — ingesting the third-party market and vessel data feeds those valuations depend on.
- Platform — the APIs and databases that let clients and other Veson teams manage, query, and derive from each dataset.
It's a team that sits close to real commercial outcomes: when a valuation is late or wrong, clients notice the same day.
The Role
As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll drive significant projects from design through to rollout, with real influence over the quality and direction of what gets built. Ownership matters to us — you'll be trusted to work autonomously, take a project from initial refinement through development, testing, and deployment, and show leadership and mentorship over one or more areas of the codebase.
How AI Fits Into This Role
This isn't about naming a specific tool — the tool your team standardises on may change. What won't change is the way we expect a senior engineer to work with one:
- Use a team-standard AI coding agent in genuine pair-programming and agentic workflows, not just autocomplete — our engineers are already running multiple parallel agents on non-trivial work.
- Manage context deliberately: the difference between an agent that helps and one that wastes your afternoon is almost always the brief and the codebase context you give it.
- Review AI-generated output as critically as you'd review a colleague's pull request — correctness, security, and architectural fit, before any of it reaches production.
- Contribute to how the team gets better at this: Veson runs an AI Champions network, monthly cross-team Brown Bag sessions, and each team reports monthly on what's working and what isn't — you'll have a voice in that, and a small budget behind it.

What You'll Do
- Drive significant projects end-to-end — design, build, test, and roll out changes across Titanic's valuation platform: a PHP and Python codebase with Node.js microservices, running on MySQL/Aurora and AWS.
- Build and maintain the APIs, data pipelines, and partner integrations that keep daily valuations accurate and on time.
- Take clear ownership of one or more areas of the codebase, including the call on how and where AI agents get used to move that area forward.
- Fix complex bugs and perform advanced refactoring, demonstrating mastery across multiple languages and tools — including the code an agent hands you.
- Grow the team through code review, pairing, and mentorship — both on engineering fundamentals and on working well with AI tooling.
- Challenge assumptions from product owners and propose viable technical alternatives.
- Translate business requirements into well-scoped user stories and technical designs.
- Assess and clearly communicate risk — for code heading to production, and for AI-assisted work still in flight.
- Collaborate frequently with engineers across the organisation, and occasionally with clients on technical challenges.
What We're Looking For
Core experience (required)
- 5+ years' professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record in at least one of PHP, Python, or Node.js/JavaScript.
- Proficient with relational databases, ideally MySQL, and comfortable moving across a mixed codebase rather than a single-language stack.
- Comfortable operating across the full SDLC — refinement, design, development, testing, and deployment.
- Able to break large, ambiguous problems into small, achievable pieces of work, and to drive them through to delivery largely autonomously.
- Experience communicating technical solutions clearly to engineers at different experience levels.
- Computer Science background — degree and/or equivalent proven industry experience.

Strongly preferred — but we'll help you get there
- Genuine hands-on experience directing AI coding agents in real engineering work, not just casual chatbot use.
- A track record of reviewing AI-generated code as critically as you'd review a colleague's, and improving on it.
- Comfortable coordinating more than one concurrent work stream — your own plus one or more AI agents — without losing track of quality or context.
If you're strong on the fundamentals but newer to agentic AI workflows, that's genuinely fine. We invest in closing that gap — through a dedicated AI Champions network, monthly cross-team knowledge-sharing, and a tooling budget per team — for engineers who bring the judgement and are eager to build the rest.
Nice to have
- Experience with Docker and containerised deployments.
- Familiarity with AWS or GCP — Veson's platform runs extensively on AWS, but strong cloud fundamentals from either transfer well.
- Experience designing or consuming GraphQL or gRPC APIs.
- Exposure to infrastructure-as-code (e.g. Terraform).
- Experience with production monitoring or error-tracking tooling (e.g. Sentry).
- Contributions to architecture design or technical documentation.
