This is a Hybrid working role. Whiteley, Hampshire
Clearance Required
This role will require attainment and maintenance of SC clearance.
About the Role
At Leidos, we deliver innovative solutions through the expertise, dedication and diversity of our people. We work alongside customers across Defence, Government, Safety, Security and Transportation. Everything we do is guided by our commitment to doing the right thing for our customers and our colleagues. Our Mission, Vision and Values shape the way we work and the impact we deliver.
We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer to join our Air Traffic Management programme. This is an opportunity to play a key role in the development and sustainment of safety-critical, real-time Air Traffic Control systems.
As part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, you will be responsible for delivering complex software solutions across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis and system design through to implementation, integration, testing, deployment and operational support. You will work across multiple applications and technical domains, applying your expertise to solve challenging engineering problems and drive successful project outcomes.
You will contribute technical leadership within project teams, influence engineering approaches and design decisions, and collaborate closely with customers, stakeholders and engineering disciplines to ensure the delivery of robust, high-quality software solutions.
While knowledge of Air Traffic Management systems would be advantageous, it is not a prerequisite for the role as we recognise that strong software engineering skills are transferable. Successful candidates will receive domain-specific training and support to build their understanding of Air Traffic Management systems and operational practices.
Knowledge and Experience
We are interested in candidates who can demonstrate significant experience in several of the following areas:
- Strong software development experience using Ada (83/95), C++, C or similar engineering-focused languages
- Software design, development and integration within Linux or Unix style environments
- Scripting and automation using technologies such as Python, Shell or Perl
- Networked and distributed systems, including TCP/IP-based communications
- Requirements analysis, software design, implementation, integration, verification and maintenance
- Experience delivering software within safety-critical, mission-critical or high-integrity environments
- Configuration management, change management and release processes
- Experience working within structured development lifecycles, including Waterfall and V-Model approaches

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
