Senior Software Engineer — TypeScript / Node.js

Location: Swinton, Manchester — hybrid, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the office

Salary: £60,000–£80,000 DOE + bonus + equity

We’re hiring a Senior Software Engineer for a UK technology business building IoT monitoring and data platforms used by major organisations across healthcare, food, energy and industrial environments.

You’ll join a development team of around 5–6 people, helping build and scale a recently launched data and automation platform. The work is predominantly greenfield, with significant scope to influence architecture, own technical decisions and shape engineering standards.

The role

You’ll work across a TypeScript stack, with a strong backend focus, developing systems that turn high volumes of real-time data into useful insights, alerts and automated workflows.

  • Building platform capabilities using TypeScript, Node.js and React/Next.js.
  • Designing and operating reliable HTTP APIs.
  • Developing high-volume, time-series data ingestion, including processing, storage and retention.
  • Designing MongoDB schemas, indexes and aggregation pipelines, and improving query performance.
  • Using Redis for caching, queueing or rate limiting.
  • Contributing to architecture, technical documentation and engineering standards.
  • Owning features through development, testing, deployment and production support.
  • Supporting the existing platform as the business transitions to its next-generation product.
  • Diagnosing production incidents and participating in an on-call rota.

What we’re looking for

  • Substantial commercial TypeScript experience across backend and frontend development.
  • Strong Node.js experience, including designing and maintaining production APIs.
  • Experience with high-volume, real-time or event-driven systems.
  • Experience working with large datasets, ideally 100 million+ datapoints.
  • Practical MongoDB experience covering schema design, indexing, aggregation and performance troubleshooting.
  • Commercial experience with Redis.
  • Solid React/Next.js experience.
  • Evidence of owning production systems, including reliability, monitoring and incident resolution.
  • Confidence making technical decisions and explaining trade-offs within a small team.
  • Experience with IoT, telemetry, time-series systems or LoRaWAN would be advantageous.
