American Express is recruiting for the role of Senior Software Engineer I. Senior Software Engineer I overseeing technical aspects of regional corporate hierarchy and limits applications. The role keeps these systems secure, resilient and highly available while supporting modernisation from mainframe-based systems to scalable, cloud-aligned architectures.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and mentor engineers, making sure team standards are followed and documentation is accurate and complete.
  • Develop database structures, APIs, prototypes and data architecture for assigned applications.
  • Transform logical data architectures into physical data designs using database design best practices and standards.
  • Provide database administration for projects building, extending or maintaining databases, data warehouses and datamarts.
  • Debug database components and verify fixes for design or performance defects.
  • Improve database design, replication, high availability, backup and recovery processes to meet requirements and standards.
  • Work with business, product, delivery architect and engineering teams on releases, prioritisation and design.

What they’re looking for

  • Have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Have 5+ years of experience in mainframe application development using COBOL, JCL, CICS and DB2.
  • Show a proven track record of maintaining and enhancing mission-critical enterprise systems.
  • Be able to analyse complex legacy applications and identify modernisation opportunities.
  • Bring strong problem-solving, debugging and communication skills.
  • Have a growth mindset and a strong desire to expand skills into distributed systems and cloud technologies.
  • Have working knowledge of Agile delivery methodology and the tools used to plan, build, test, configure and maintain applications.
