American Express is recruiting for the role of Senior Software Engineer I. Senior Software Engineer I overseeing technical aspects of regional corporate hierarchy and limits applications. The role keeps these systems secure, resilient and highly available while supporting modernisation from mainframe-based systems to scalable, cloud-aligned architectures.

What you’ll do
- Lead and mentor engineers, making sure team standards are followed and documentation is accurate and complete.
- Develop database structures, APIs, prototypes and data architecture for assigned applications.
- Transform logical data architectures into physical data designs using database design best practices and standards.
- Provide database administration for projects building, extending or maintaining databases, data warehouses and datamarts.
- Debug database components and verify fixes for design or performance defects.
- Improve database design, replication, high availability, backup and recovery processes to meet requirements and standards.
- Work with business, product, delivery architect and engineering teams on releases, prioritisation and design.

What they’re looking for
- Have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Have 5+ years of experience in mainframe application development using COBOL, JCL, CICS and DB2.
- Show a proven track record of maintaining and enhancing mission-critical enterprise systems.
- Be able to analyse complex legacy applications and identify modernisation opportunities.
- Bring strong problem-solving, debugging and communication skills.
- Have a growth mindset and a strong desire to expand skills into distributed systems and cloud technologies.
- Have working knowledge of Agile delivery methodology and the tools used to plan, build, test, configure and maintain applications.

Additional role information
- The role involves supporting COBOL/DB2-based applications while advancing distributed, API-driven and event-based solutions.
- Tech stack includes Db2, COBOL, AI DevEx tools, on-prem automation testing and GitHub Enterprise Server.
- There is potential visa sponsorship for certain positions, depending on business unit requirements, the nature of the position, cost and applicable laws.
