Senior Software Engineer I (Java & JavaScript)

About the Team
You will join the Identity & Access Management team, which owns the authentication and authorization infrastructure underpinning Elsevier’s global product suite.
We build and operate a highly available identity platform that integrates with multiple identity providers, entitlement services, and downstream APIs, running on AWS ECS and EKS.
About the Role
This position is performed by an experienced professional and will undertake difficult research, design, and software development assignments within a software functional area or product line, and provides direct input to project plans, schedules, and methodology in the development of cross-functional software products under the guidance of more senior members of the squad. This position performs software design - typically across multiple components; develops the skills of mentoring more junior members of the team and works with others to talk to users/customers and translates their requests into solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Interface with other technical personnel or team members to finalize requirements
- Write and review portions of detailed specifications for the development of complex system components
- Complete complex bug fixes
- Implement and guides others to continuous integration, delivery, and deployment software delivery practices
- Identifies operational requirements for logging, instrumentation, and alerting and works with Senior II to ensure operational requirements are met
- Proficient in implementing continuous integration, delivery, and deployment software delivery practices
- Aware of operational requirements and implementation for logging, instrumentation, and alerting
- Work closely with other development team members to understand product complex requirements and translate them into software designs.
- Successfully implement development processes, coding best practices, and code reviews
- Operate in various development environments (Agile, Waterfall, etc.) while collaborating with key stakeholders
- Resolve complex intermediate technical issues as necessary
- Pair Programming with squad members to support the learning and development of others
- Develop skills to mentor less senior software developers on development methodologies and optimization techniques

Requirements
- Knowledge of software development methodologies (e.g., Agile, Waterfall)
- Intermediate proficiency with data manipulation language, including optimization techniques
- Intermediate understanding of normalized/dimensional data modelling principles
- Intermediate knowledge of multiple data storage subsystems
- Confident practitioner in development languages including but not limited to: Java/J2EE, JavaScript, JSP, HTML, Node.js, React, XML, SQL, Windows, Unix.
- Experience with Keycloak, Auth0, or another identity provider, including realm configuration, authentication flows, and OIDC client setup.
- Proficient research skills
- Developing knowledge in Industry best practices in development
- Knowledge in using and developing in applicable toolsets
- Ability to interface competently with other technical personnel or team members to finalize requirements
- Ability to work well with internal and external technology resources
- Knowledge of test-driven development
- Ability to write and review portions of detailed specifications for the development of complex system components
- Ability to complete complex bug fixes
- Good oral and written communication skills
Good to Have
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, or Codex, for test authoring, stub generation, coverage analysis, or test-output investigation.
- Experience treating AI-assisted tools as productivity accelerators within a quality engineering workflow while maintaining appropriate review and validation practices.
- Familiarity with Keycloak or another identity provider, including realm configuration, authentication flows, and OIDC client setup.
- Experience with Terraform or another infrastructure-as-code tool, including the ability to read infrastructure definitions and understand how configuration changes affect system behaviour and test coverage.
- Experience working with Docker and Kubernetes.
