Senior Software Engineer

12 months

£67.70 per hour (Inside IR35)

Onsite - New Malden (KT3) - SW London

Defence

They will lead activities to develop and commission software engineering work products and supporting artefacts, contributing to several activities throughout the software engineering life cycle. They will take responsibility for activities to design, code, analyse and verify Software components of the product and ensure the appropriate documents are recorded.

The role holder will provide technical direction, coach and develop engineers, and ensure high quality software delivery across multiple workstreams. Working closely with the Team Leads, the role holder will shape priorities, drive engineering excellence and ensure the team delivers secure, reliable and mission critical capability to the fleet.

Typical duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide technical leadership to team members, providing technical oversight for Software components or small sub-systems to ensure that all activities enhance the Software.
  • Lead activities to define and capture the design of software components, to meet identified requirements by following appropriate design standards and principles. Ensure design artefacts are maintained, to take account of change following release of the software and/or system.
  • Review and analyse software work products, to ensure the Software is robust and efficient.
  • Define strategies, develop associated plans and lead the activities to identify and record the activities required to verify software elements, tailoring the approach dependent on the criticality of the element (e.g. safety critical testing should be comprehensive).
  • Oversee development and maintenance of software work products to ensure that the Software meets customer requirements, using an iterative or sequential development life cycle model.
  • Identify and communicate with stakeholders to establish operational scenarios/concepts, elicit and capture requirements for subsequent elaboration and development. Revise requirements relating to a set of software elements to take account of change following release of the software and/or system products.
  • Take control of activities to produce, assess and revise estimates for software engineering work packages using appropriate methods and techniques, to allow accurate bids to be submitted.

  • An Engineer with deep technical software engineering knowledge, having demonstrated their ability across several software development projects to design and deliver robust solutions.
  • Team Leading experience; both managing work and reporting on costs (desirable).
  • Background in software product development and/or delivery, preferably in a large, complex multi-project environment.
  • Can demonstrate an understanding of software engineering methodologies, processes, procedures and best practices.
