Senior Software Engineer - Backend/Full Stack
Oxfordshire | Hybrid | Up to £100k + Bonus
We’re working with an established technology business looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join one of its product engineering teams.
You’ll work on customer-facing technology where performance, reliability and scalability matter, with the opportunity to own meaningful engineering problems and influence how systems are designed and built.
This is a hands-on role. You’ll still be writing code, solving difficult problems and getting close to the technology, while helping shape technical decisions and supporting other engineers.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll take ownership of engineering problems from the early stages through to production. You’ll be:
- Designing and building reliable backend services and APIs.
- Working primarily with Java as the main backend language.
- Designing systems that can scale while remaining maintainable and resilient.
- Working with distributed and event-driven architectures.
- Investigating performance issues and identifying bottlenecks.
- Thinking through architecture, system design and technical trade-offs.
- Improving monitoring, observability and operational reliability.
- Writing well-tested, maintainable production code.
- Working across the stack when needed, including modern frontend technologies.
- Collaborating closely with Engineering, Product and other technical teams.
- Reviewing code and contributing to engineering standards.
- Mentoring and supporting other engineers.
- Using modern AI-assisted development tools as part of the engineering process.

About You
You’ll have strong experience building production backend software, but your current language doesn’t need to be Java.
You could come from Java, C#, .NET, Go, Python or another modern backend language.
What matters is that you have strong engineering fundamentals and are genuinely interested in moving into Java and using it as your main backend language day to day.
You’ll be comfortable with:
- Data structures, algorithms and problem solving.
- Object-oriented design and software engineering principles.
- Designing and developing APIs.
- SQL and relational databases.
- System design and distributed systems.
- Performance, scalability and reliability.
- Testing and production-quality engineering.
- Taking an unclear problem, asking the right questions and shaping a sensible technical approach.
- Explaining technical decisions and trade-offs clearly.
- Working collaboratively with other engineers and product teams.
- Taking ownership of technical problems through to production.
Useful Experience
Experience with some of the following would be useful:
- Java and Spring Boot
- AWS or another major cloud platform
- React, JavaScript or TypeScript
- Kafka or other event-driven technologies
- NoSQL databases
- Docker and Kubernetes
- CI/CD
- Monitoring and observability
- AI-assisted coding tools

You’ll join an engineering environment where Senior Engineers are trusted to own problems rather than simply complete tickets.
That means understanding the problem first, asking the right questions, challenging assumptions when needed and considering different approaches before deciding how something should be built.

Package & Working Pattern
- Salary: Up to £100k base + bonus
- Location: Oxfordshire

If you’re a Senior Software Engineer who enjoys backend engineering, system design and solving difficult technical problems, we’d be keen to hear from you.
You don’t need commercial Java experience already. If you’re a strong backend engineer working with C#, .NET, Go, Python or another language and want to make Java your primary backend language, your experience could still be highly relevant.
You also don’t need to match every point above. What matters is strong engineering fundamentals, evidence of solving meaningful production problems and the ability to explain the thinking behind your decisions.
