I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Success within the first 12 months
Success in the first 12 months looks like getting up to speed fast on the product domain, codebase, and architecture—making good calls and explaining trade-offs clearly. You ship meaningful, production-ready work at a steady pace, turning complex problems into pragmatic increments and owning delivery end-to-end. You lift the quality bar with clean, maintainable code, sensible refactoring, and tests that stop regressions. You strengthen reliability and operability by improving performance, resilience, and observability, and you help drive structured incident investigation through to root-cause fixes. You work seamlessly in a Scrum team and with Product and Test partners - spotting risks early and keeping people aligned. You lead through example in reviews and technical communication, and you actively support and mentor junior and mid-level engineers. Over the year, you remove friction through automation, pipeline and developer-experience improvements, and you leave the team and systems noticeably better than you found them.
