Software Engineer (L6)

๐Ÿ“Manchester (Hybrid, up to 4 days WFH) | ๐Ÿ’ฐ ยฃ70k-ยฃ90k

Street Group is one of the fastest-growing PropTech companies in the UK. We want to be the leading creator of delightful experiences for everybody involved in buying, selling, renting and letting property, regardless of their involvement, to improve the industry for everybody by elevating UK Estate Agencies through world-class technology.

Our products, Street.co.uk and Spectre form a powerful duo, working harmoniously together to transform an agent's job. From securing more leads and winning new instructions to streamlining business operations and growing market share, our products are supercharging 1,000s of agencies across the UK.

How we work in 2026

Engineering at Street Group has changed. Most of us don't write code by hand day-to-day anymore - agents do; we direct. The bar has moved with it; planning and judgement matter more than typing speed: engineers run several workstreams in parallel, directing agent sessions while their own attention goes on design calls and the more complex problems.

Being genuinely tuned into AI tooling is core to the role here, not a side skill - if you'd rather work without these tools, that's fair - but we're probably not the place for you.

At Principal level, you'll set technical direction for a whole part of the product, sit at the table in discovery and design, and help shape how engineering at Street Group works through our technical leadership network. If you want strategic, product-level impact without leaving the IC track, we think you'd fit right in!

Here's what you can expect to be working on as a Software Engineer (L6) at Street Group

  • Setting technical direction across a portion of the product: deciding which systems get built, how they fit together and what gets retired, while still contributing and steering the engineers around you.
  • Finding the problems nobody has named yet, like "something about how we do X won't survive the next year of growth", then framing them, making them tractable and taking them through to a solution across teams.
  • Leading technical decision making at product-area level: the shared services, platform pieces and seams between teams, and you'll own reviews for the big changes.
  • Getting ahead of scaling bottlenecks, operational toil and security exposure before teams feel them, using data rather than gut feel - your aim is for whole teams to ship faster quarter on quarter.
  • Driving the agents, shared plugins and AI infrastructure in CI and review that the whole function relies on. You'll own their governance (failure modes, drift, safe-use standards) and make build-vs-buy recommendations that inform our AI investment.
  • Leading on complex platform changes, major framework upgrades, security architecture, estate-level cost and reliability work - and getting multiple teams aligned on outcomes everyone can live with.
  • Acting as a co-owner of product outcomes: bringing proposals product adopts, often opportunities engineering spotted first, and explaining complex technical trade-offs in commercial terms leadership can act on.
  • Lifting engineers beyond your own team through mentoring, standards and tooling.

Iโ€™m in my final year doing Economics and I donโ€™t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer โ€” it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) donโ€™t need a masters. Letโ€™s look at the ones youโ€™d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet โ€” that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

A bit about you

  • You have deep commercial experience with PHP and Laravel (or a similar MVC framework), and you've led architecture and design across multiple teams or systems, not just within one.
  • You have experience working with Vue 3, React, Angular or a similar modern JS framework.
  • You have strong production experience with AWS. ECS, RDS, SQS, Lambda and EventBridge are advantageous, and you're comfortable shaping cost, reliability and security at estate level.
  • You work AI-natively by default, and you've gone beyond your own workflow to build AI tooling, agents or infrastructure that other engineers rely on. You also know how to put guardrails around it.
  • You turn ambiguity into direction: you're used to open-ended problems with no brief, and the solutions you ship to hard problems are the boring, maintainable kind.
  • You get up to speed fast. Drop you into an unfamiliar team or codebase and you're adding value in your first week.
  • You think in products and systems: you can see how a technical decision lands in the business, and how a change to a team or process will affect a system boundary.
  • You're a trusted influencer and communicator. You can align teams with competing priorities, tell leadership early when something affects customers, money or reputation, and make the engineers around you better.

A note on using AI in your job application

As a fast-moving and rapidly evolving tech company, we embrace the advantages of AI and encourage its use throughout our application process. How we use AI in the hiring process

Candidate experience is really important to us, and our Talent team use AI notetakers during interviews so they can focus purely on their conversation with you. All hiring decisions are made by humans - not AI. Let us know if you have any questions!
