Working pattern: Hybrid – 1 day onsite in Westminster

We are recruiting two Senior Software Engineers to join a newly established Digital, Data and Technology function within a major public-sector organisation.
You will help design, develop and improve high-quality digital services, with a particular focus on Node.js applications, APIs, microservices and serverless technologies. This is a hands-on engineering position offering the opportunity to influence technical decisions, promote engineering best practice and contribute to user-centred services.
Key responsibilities
- Design and develop scalable, maintainable Node.js applications using Express.js or NestJS
- Build RESTful and GraphQL APIs
- Develop microservices and serverless applications
- Integrate applications with internal platforms and third-party systems
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines
- Write unit and integration tests
- Ensure security and data-protection controls are embedded within applications
- Contribute to system design and review the technical designs of others
- Balance short-term delivery requirements with long-term engineering sustainability
- Create and maintain clear technical documentation
- Collaborate with product managers, customers, engineers and senior stakeholders
- Promote agile, user-centred approaches and modern engineering standards

Essential experience
- Strong commercial JavaScript and Node.js development experience
- Express.js experience
- Microsoft Azure
- SQL and NoSQL databases, ideally MongoDB and Microsoft SQL Server
- RESTful and GraphQL API development
- Containerised microservices using Docker
- Automated testing and CI/CD
- GitHub, Azure DevOps or GitLab
- Software development lifecycle knowledge
- Systems design and application integration
- Secure software-development practices

Experience working with GDS or Ministry of Justice components and public-sector technology standards would be advantageous.
Security-clearance requirement
To meet the National Security Vetting requirements for this role, applicants must have resided continuously in the UK for at least the five years immediately preceding their application. Candidates who do not meet this requirement will not be eligible for SC clearance and therefore cannot be considered.
