Senior Software Engineer
Position: Senior Software Engineer
Type: Contractor (~15 Hours/Week)
Compensation: $100–$150/hour
Location: Remote
About the Opportunity
micro1 is engaging expert Senior Software Engineers to support a customer project focused on training and improving next-generation AI systems.
In this role, you will apply your software engineering expertise to create Reinforcement Learning (RL) environments that evaluate AI models on complex software engineering problems involving bug fixing, feature implementation, code refactoring, and performance optimization. You will create reproducible environments and golden reference solutions that enable consistent and reliable evaluation.
Prior AI experience is not required—your software engineering expertise and technical judgment are the primary focus.
Responsibilities
- Create realistic and challenging software engineering tasks for AI models to solve.
- Develop reproducible Reinforcement Learning environments for evaluating software engineering capabilities.
- Create golden reference solutions that provide reliable benchmarks for AI-generated implementations.
- Contribute expert-level code samples, debugging strategies, and development insights across Python3, Java, Rust, Go, C++, and TypeScript.
- Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex software defects and performance bottlenecks.
- Implement robust features while maintaining scalability, reliability, and software engineering best practices.
- Refactor and optimize legacy code to improve clarity, efficiency, maintainability, and long-term reliability.
- Review and validate peer-contributed code and technical submissions for correctness and clarity.
- Document technical reasoning, solution approaches, implementation decisions, and edge cases.
- Provide high-quality technical input to improve AI training and evaluation datasets.

Required Qualifications
- Significant hands-on software engineering experience in one or more of:
- Python3
- Java
- Rust
- Go
- C++
- TypeScript
- Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, and software engineering principles.
- Proven ability to debug complex systems and resolve software defects.
- Experience implementing and optimizing software features.
- Strong experience with codebase refactoring and performance optimization.
- Ability to develop reliable, reproducible software solutions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail in code validation and technical implementation.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Deep expertise in at least one of the listed programming languages.
- Experience working with large and complex codebases.
- Track record of delivering high-impact software features from conception through production.
- Experience modernizing legacy systems or performing large-scale codebase refactoring.
- Experience developing debugging strategies and performance optimizations for complex systems.
- Experience creating technical benchmarks, coding challenges, evaluation environments, or reference solutions.
- Familiarity with AI systems, machine learning workflows, or AI-assisted software development.
- Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
- Interest in AI engineering and emerging technical challenges.

Compensation & Engagement
- Compensation: $100–$150/hour.
- Compensation is output-based, with experts paid per task that meets project specifications.
- Task completion time may vary depending on complexity, experience, and individual workflow.
- Minimum submission requirements apply.
- Experts are expected to complete a minimum number of tasks per week.
- Expected commitment: approximately 15 hours per week.
