About bp
At bp, we’re redefining our business to deliver a net zero future while continuing to provide the energy the world needs today. Innovation & Engineering brings together engineers, technologists, scientists, and entrepreneurs to create and scale technology that delivers measurable value across bp. We are driving digital transformation, developing new business models, and building innovative solutions that improve how we operate, trade, and serve our customers. Join us as we use technology, data, and AI to create competitive advantage across bp’s trading and commercial businesses.
The role
We are looking for an expert Senior Software Engineer to join our Trading, Shipping & Supply & Technology organisation in London. You will be part of a high-performing engineering team responsible for building and evolving digital products across our Risk, Pricing, and Trading (RPT) Middle Office Technology landscape.
Working closely with traders, schedulers, operators, exposure analysts, commodity risk analysts, finance teams, product managers, UX designers, and data engineers, you will design and deliver technology that enables faster, better, and more informed commercial decisions.
This is a hands-on engineering role with significant opportunity to influence architecture, engineering standards, and the long-term technology strategy. You will work closely with the Technical Lead and business customers to turn sophisticated business problems into scalable, resilient, and production-ready solutions.
A key focus of the role will be taking Data and AI solutions from discovery through to production, including rapid prototyping, evaluation, deployment, and operation of agentic applications such as multi-agent systems and Model Context Protocol (MCP) services.
What you’ll do
Software engineering
- Design and develop sophisticated backend services, platforms, and RESTful APIs that support critical trading and middle-office workflows.
- Build scalable, resilient, and cloud-native applications using modern software engineering practices.
- Develop high-quality, maintainable code with a strong focus on automated testing, including TDD and BDD.
- Identify and address technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and opportunities to simplify and improve the technology landscape.
- Apply sound software architecture principles, including Domain-Driven Design, reactive programming, and event-driven architectures.
- Chip in to architectural decisions and the evolution of the team’s technology platform and long-term roadmap.
- Design and implement production-grade streaming solutions capable of low-latency, high-throughput, and fault-tolerant processing.
- Address sophisticated problems involving stateful stream processing, partitioning, concurrency, resilience, and timely computation.
- Apply a strong understanding of multithreading, networking, and JVM performance to build efficient and reliable applications.
Data & AI
- Lead the discovery-to-deployment journey for Data and AI applications, moving solutions from prototypes into production.
- Develop production-grade agentic workflows, including multi-agent architectures and MCP-based services.
- Build high-performance evaluation pipelines and observability frameworks to assess the accuracy, safety, reliability, and latency of AI-powered applications.
- Find opportunities where AI, automation, and data can deliver measurable business value and return on investment.
- Use modern AI-assisted development tools to increase engineering productivity, improve problem solving, and accelerate delivery while maintaining high engineering standards.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
