Senior Software Engineer - Python/Data/Backend - Manchester / Croydon - Up to £80K
We're partnering with a data-driven technology organisation looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help shape the way complex, high-value datasets are transformed, distributed and consumed across a global business.
This is a hands-on engineering role focused on building robust backend services and modern data products that support both internal users and external customers. You'll work at the intersection of software engineering and data engineering, designing scalable services, developing reliable data pipelines and helping define the standards that underpin a growing data platform.
You'll join a collaborative engineering environment where teams own solutions end-to-end, from design and development through to production operation. The role offers significant influence over architecture, engineering practices and the future direction of a platform that sits at the heart of the organisation's products and services.
For engineers who enjoy solving complex data challenges, improving platform reliability and creating systems that are genuinely relied upon by customers, this is an opportunity to make a measurable impact.
What You'll Be Doing
- Building and evolving backend services that power the delivery of large-scale data products
- Designing and developing scalable ETL/ELT pipelines and data processing workflows
- Transforming complex datasets into trusted, accessible and consumable products
- Contributing to platform architecture, technical standards and engineering best practice
- Working closely with software, platform and data teams to improve data accessibility and reliability
- Supporting production systems, observability and operational excellence
- Championing data quality, governance, security and long-term maintainability
- Mentoring engineers and contributing to a strong engineering culture

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
