Senior Backend Python Engineer (Scale-Up / Platform Ownership)
Salary: Up to £85,000 + Benefits
Location: Edinburgh (Hybrid / Remote with ~1-2 days/month in Edinburgh)

We’re a fast-moving, data-heavy B2B SaaS scale-up looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help lead the evolution of our core application and platform layer. Sitting in a small, highly senior engineering team, you won’t just be writing code—you’ll be defining domain boundaries, designing robust FastAPI services, and establishing modern, AI-agent-assisted engineering standards.
Over time, this role offers a clear path into technical ownership of our Application / Platform domain.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Shape Architecture: Design and build high-throughput backend services, APIs, and data integrations without working against a rigid pre-existing spec.
- Drive Domain Boundaries: Help transition our platform toward a clear, domain-based operating model (Data, Infrastructure, Application/Platform).
- Leverage AI Engineering: Work at the forefront of AI-assisted delivery—using tools like Claude Code and Cursor, setting guardrails, and reviewing agent-generated code for architectural soundness.
- Embrace Autonomy: Thrive in a fluid, fast-paced setup where you own outcomes end-to-end and bring constructive technical opinions.

What We’re Looking For
- Core Tech Stack: Strong, production-grade Python and high-level FastAPI expertise.
- Data & Cloud: Practical experience with PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy (or similar ORMs), AWS, and Docker.
- Architectural Judgement: Solid experience with API design, microservices/domain-oriented design, and integrating third-party platforms.
- Startup / Scale-Up DNA: Comfortable navigating ambiguity, moving fast, and taking initiative in small, senior teams.
- Modern Tooling Interest: Curiosity or hands-on experience using AI coding agents (Claude, Codex, Cursor) safely in production workflows.
