Senior Software Engineer

Salary: £65,000 - £70,000
Location: UK / Remote
Employment Type: Full-Time
Reports To: VP of Engineering

CR3 are currently representing a growing technology business specialising in EdTech SaaS solutions, delivering innovative software platforms that support educational organisations, students and educators. The business is continuing to invest in its technology and product development and is looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join its Engineering team.

This is a key position within the development function, offering the opportunity to play a hands-on role in building and enhancing modern, high-performing web applications. You will work closely with the Engineering Manager and wider development teams across the full software development lifecycle, while also contributing to technical architecture, engineering standards and the development of more junior team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Engineering Manager to deliver the technology strategy.
  • Work with development teams throughout the full product development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing and release.
  • Design and develop reusable software modules and components.
  • Develop new software modules and enhance existing applications.
  • Contribute to technical design and software architecture.
  • Coach and mentor junior developers, helping to develop engineering capability and best practices across the team.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies that could benefit the business and its products.
  • Maintain and improve software development practices, processes and standards.
  • Evolve existing applications, systems and architecture.
  • Take ownership of identifying areas for improvement and proactively delivering solutions.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Legally authorised to work in the UK.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years' professional software development experience.
  • Strong experience with the Java EE stack, including multi-tier applications and the Spring Framework / Spring MVC.
  • Strong database experience, including Hibernate and SQL.
  • Experience with open-source technology stacks and Apache projects.
  • Strong web development experience, particularly with React and CSS.
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks and tools including JUnit, Postman and Mockito.
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle, particularly within an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Experience writing and maintaining automated tests as part of the software development lifecycle.
  • Experience developing and working with REST web services.
  • Ability to work across both the application/business tier and UI tier.
  • Experience creating and designing application architectures from scratch.
  • Strong organisational skills and a high level of attention to detail.
  • A strong work ethic with the ability to take ownership and deliver against deadlines.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly and introduce fresh ideas that can benefit the products and wider business.

  • Experience developing multi-tenant SaaS applications, ideally within a start-up or mid-sized technology business.
  • Experience with microservices architecture.
  • Previous experience leading, coaching or mentoring other software engineers.
  • Experience within EdTech software or the wider education technology sector.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with software development and SDLC tools including Jenkins, Git, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps (ADO).
  • Experience with containerisation technologies such as Docker.

The successful candidate will be a technically strong and proactive Senior Engineer who enjoys taking ownership and contributing to both the development of products and the wider engineering function. You will ideally demonstrate:
