About Hertfordshire Constabulary

Hertfordshire Constabulary employs over 3,800 officers and staff, alongside more than 300 PCSOs and Special Constables. We are a modern, proactive, and flexible police force, committed to putting our communities first and supporting victims when they need us most.

We are proud to be an organisation that values diversity, inclusion, and integrity, and we are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels respected, supported, and able to thrive.

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified Solicitor or Barrister to join our Legal Services Department, providing a comprehensive legal service across a wide range of civil and corporate matters.

Reporting to the Head of Legal Services, you will play a key role in ensuring the Constabulary’s legal responsibilities are effectively identified, managed, and protected, while supporting operational and organisational decision-making.

This is a varied and engaging role where no two days are the same, offering exposure to a broad portfolio of legal work within a policing environment.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Provide legal advice across civil litigation, employment, disciplinary, and corporate/commercial matters
  • Conduct and support civil litigation, including preparing cases and attending court or tribunal hearings
  • Respond to civil claims by gathering evidence, assessing liability, and negotiating settlements where appropriate
  • Undertake legal research to support robust case preparation and representation
  • Advise on the legal implications of legislative changes, policy developments, and organisational decisions
  • Support the development and implementation of legal policies, procedures, and governance frameworks
  • Provide management information and insight to support corporate planning

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
