The opportunity has arisen for two enthusiastic and committed clinical coders to become Senior Specialist Clinical Coders here at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTH) as part of One Lancashire and South Cumbria (One LSC).
We are looking for motivated clinical coders who are keen to expand their Clinical Coding experience and knowledge in the specific areas of T&O and Plastic Surgery or Urology and ENT as well as take part in the day-to-day coding of a wide variety of case mix along with the rest of the team.
We can offer you the chance to share your skills by mentoring trainees / less experienced coders and as part of a senior team, you’ll have the ability to make a positive difference to service delivery. There is also the opportunity for improvement work and clinical engagement to be undertaken, with support where required.
About the Role
As a Senior Specialist Clinical Coder, you will have extensive knowledge of A&P, Medical Terminology and ICD / OPCS Clinical Coding Classifications. You will be experienced in coding within a UK NHS Acute Trust setting and ACC qualified or willing to gain on commencement in post.

Key Responsibilities
- To provide Clinical Coding expertise in several specialty areas, to department and Trust staff.
- To provide maximum coverage and high quality clinically coded information within the Clinical Coding Department and in line with national and local standards, in accordance with Trust deadlines.
- To be accountable for the accurate translation of medical information, and therefore the quality of data produced, by responsibility for maintaining current and appropriate knowledge.
- To use the ICD10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems – 10th Revision) and OPCS classifications to appropriately assign codes to admitted patient care episodes in order to support service and management information requirements, along with the Payment by Results (PbR) process.
- To ensure Coding deadlines are met, in accordance with SUS submission timetable.
- To work as a productive member of a pro-active team to ensure optimal efficiency for provision of an outstanding Coding Service to the Trust.
About You
This role is mentally demanding requiring long periods of concentration in a highly pressured and changeable work environment. LTH workload covers a wide variety of clinical specialties, including a number of regional fields such as Oncology, Neurosurgery and Renal Medicine.

This role will give you the opportunity to begin an in-depth career in the field of Clinical Coding, broaden your experience within the profession or enhance your existing knowledge of these areas by working in specialist teams with rotation. Support is available within the team structure at LTH from the Senior Coders, Trainer, and Auditors.
Our Coders work with a range of electronic systems including scanned patient notes and as such the role involves full daily use of computer screens.
We are currently exploring an agile working model within the department so there is the option to introduce an element of homeworking alongside the Preston Business Centre base, following a period of on-site training.
