Senior SQL Database Administrator

📍 Cardiff. Mostly remote (1-2 times a month in the office)
💰 £60,000 - £65,000
🔐 SC clearance eligibility required

We’re recruiting for a Senior SQL Database Administrator to join a global technology consultancy, working on one of their major public-sector accounts.

You’ll manage and support a business-critical SQL Server estate across development, test and production, ensuring the databases remain secure, resilient, and performing effectively.

This is a broad, hands-on position combining traditional SQL Server administration with T-SQL development and Azure. You’ll take the lead on complex incidents, root-cause analysis, and performance improvements, while working closely with developers, Azure specialists, and DevOps engineers on releases, automation, and the wider modernization of the database estate.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The wider delivery team consists of around 12–13 people, including Azure architects, platform engineers, developers, DevOps, and release specialists. This is viewed as a strategic hire, with the opportunity to take on greater technical leadership and customer-facing responsibility over time.

The role is paying up to £65,000 and is predominantly home-based. The team normally meets in central Cardiff around once a fortnight, with some flexibility around attendance.

Eligibility to obtain SC clearance is required, and the interview process consists of two stages over Teams.
