Technical Services provides in-house consultancy to DIO and the wider MOD, the specialist skills available through the Technical Services team span Construction, Engineering, Health and Safety, Safety Systems, Environmental Management, Sustainable Development, Access and Recreation, Historic Environment and Natural Environment.
Job Description
The Senior Structural Engineer is a key member of the Structures Team, providing specialist technical advice and assurance on the safety, resilience and performance of Defence infrastructure worldwide. The role supports the MOD's intelligent client function, delivering expertise across the design, construction, inspection, maintenance and refurbishment of a diverse range of structural assets.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Providing technical advice on steel, concrete, masonry, timber and modular structures across the MOD estate.
- Supporting the assurance of structural safety through inspections, assessments, independent technical reviews and standards development.
- Delivering specialist advice on Weapon Effects on Structures (WES), including blast effects, protective design, force protection measures and infrastructure resilience.
- Supporting the review and assessment of higher-risk buildings in accordance with the Building Safety Act.
- Leading or supporting investigations into structural defects, failures and incidents, and contributing to Safety Alerts and lessons identified.
- Providing technical oversight and advice on temporary works in accordance with BS 5975 and MOD policy.
- Promoting sustainable and resilient engineering solutions across Defence infrastructure.
Person Specification
Essential Skills And Experience:
- Experience in the design, assessment, construction or maintenance of steel and/or reinforced concrete structures.
- Understanding of masonry, timber and modular construction methods.
- Knowledge of structural inspection, assessment and defect investigation.
- Ability to interpret and apply structural engineering standards and guidance.
- Knowledge of sustainable construction and infrastructure resilience principles.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to provide technical advice to a wide range of stakeholders.

Desirable Skills And Experience:
- Chartered Engineer status (or working towards Chartership).
- Knowledge of BS 5975 and temporary works procedures.
- Experience of structural incident, accident or failure investigations.
- Experience of blast engineering, protective design or Weapon Effects on Structures.
- Knowledge of force protection engineering and infrastructure resilience.
- Experience using structural analysis and design software such as Tekla Structural Designer and Autodesk Robot.
- Experience working within complex, regulated or safety-critical environments.

Employment Hours
The post advertised is for 37 hours net, however the Ministry of Defence offers a range of flexibilities to enable a better work-life balance for employees. Flexible working, Part-time working and Job Share working patterns will be considered.
Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. All office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to site capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of office attendance. Applicants can request further information regarding how this and other flexible working arrangements may work in their team from the Vacancy Holder (see advert for contact details). Defence Business Services cannot respond to any questions about working arrangements.
The post does not offer relocation expenses.
External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.

Selection Process Details
