About The Opportunity
Gateley Hamer are a property consultancy who provides our clients with solutions around extracting the most value from their development assets with specific expertise relating to CPOs DCOs, easements and wayleaves, infrastructure projects, land referencing and public inquiries.
Operating across the public and private sectors, we work with commercial and residential developers, planning professionals, local authorities and scheme promoters, providing expertise on complex, large-scale developments.
The Role
We are looking for a Senior Surveyor to join our Infrastructure team. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading on landowner consultations and advising clients on all aspects of Development Consent Orders for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.
- Overseeing and drafting of all Lands related documents for the preparation and implementation of Development Consent Orders.
- Providing advice to clients on the promotion and implementation of Compulsory Purchase Powers.
- Engaging and negotiating with landowners and carrying out landowner consultations.
- Working alongside other professional disciplines throughout the full life-cycle of major projects.
- Assisting with all compulsory purchase matters, including drafting valuations, preparing compensation claims and negotiating compensation settlements and agreements.
- Preparing reports and advice notes on all matters relating to compulsory purchase and compensation.
- Assisting and providing advice to landowners affected by Compulsory Purchase.
- Advising acquiring authorities on the promotion and implementation of compulsory purchase powers.
- Involvement in all stages of the compulsory purchase process from pre-application consultation to negotiating compensation claims.
- Building relationships with key clients and seeking to extend instructions and secure new instructions from new and existing clients.
- Preparing reports and advice notes in accordance with the business’s quality assurance procedures.
- Assisting in graduate development across the team.
- Leading and overseeing the preparation of Property Costs Estimates.

The Team
Gateley Hamer is part of Gateley Built Environment, a multidisciplinary consultancy made up of four established specialist businesses: Gateley Hamer, Gateley RJA, Gateley Smithers Purslow and Gateley Vinden. Together, we bring more than 600 property specialists together with the property and construction lawyers in Gateley Legal.
This gives our clients access to connected expertise across the full property lifecycle, from strategy, funding and development through to occupation, long-term asset management and exit.
About You
Applicants should also be able to demonstrate the following attributes:
- BSc Hons MRICS qualified
- Experience negotiating and advising clients
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proactive and disciplined
- Ambitious individual who thrives on negotiating with multiple parties to achieve the best possible outcome for their client
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the confidence to communicate effectively at all levels
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to time manage effectively
- Experience in leading on the promotion, submission, delivery and implementation of Development Consent Orders and Compulsory Purchase Orders
- Experience in working to deadlines and within budgets on a wide range of projects
- Solid understanding of the DCO and CPO processes, including the Planning Act 2008, Town and Country Planning Act, the Transport and Works Act 1992 and all relevant Compulsory Purchase legislation.
