At Bath & North East Somerset Council we have one overriding purpose to improve people’s lives.

About The Team

We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated, professional individual to work in our Home Improvement Team as a Senior Surveyor/Specialist Grants Officer, on a temporary basis providing maternity cover.

The post involves working as part of a team, providing Disabled Facilities Grants, and other financial assistance, as set out in the current published Decent Homes Policy, to improve and adapt the homes of eligible residents in Bath and North East Somerset. Ensuring timely, effective, and a person-centred support that promotes independence and safety.

About The Role

You will prepare schedules of work, evaluate costs and inspect the quality of completed works agreed for grant funding/financial assistance, to ensure value for money. This will include referring and agreeing the scope of eligible works with the Council’s commissioned Home Improvement Agency on complex cases.

This post is 37 hours per week, based at the Civic Centre, Keynsham. However, alternative workplaces, including home based working, can also be used with the agreement of the manager. Additionally, there may occasionally be a requirement to work, or be available outside of regular office hours, including for evening meetings.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
