AECOM is seeking a Senior Sustainability Consultant to join our established Sustainability & Decarbonisation Advisory team, part of our Building Engineering Business Line, which is recognised as a leader in sustainable development.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering Sustainability & Carbon services for major public and private sector clients, helping them to design and deliver low-carbon, resilient, and sustainable estates.
This role spans a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, education and commercial, but primarily focuses on UK Defence & National Security.
Key Responsibilities
With support from the wider team, you will be responsible for:
- Supporting clients to develop and understand their sustainability & decarbonisation requirements.
- Developing, delivering, and reviewing whole lifecycle carbon (WLC) reduction strategies across various scoping mechanisms, such as:
- Greater London Authority and collaborations with LETI & RIBA, RICS, BREEAM (e.g., evolving criteria to new sustainability standards such as BREEAM UK New Construction)
- DREAM (Defence Real Estate Assurance Method)
- Liaising directly with clients, designers, stakeholders, and engineers to develop sustainability & decarbonisation strategies from early design phases through to construction.
- Delivery of assessment certification schemes, including:
- BREEAM & DREAM (experience with LEED & WELL are advantageous).
- Delivery of sustainability appraisals (e.g., Whole Life Carbon Estimations with OneClick LCA, SAW – Sustainable Appraisal of Water Resources, SEEAM).
- Supporting project management and programming of sustainability projects.
- Collaborating in the bid process, including tender responses to win new work.
- Mentoring junior staff, facilitating upskilling and professional development.

Requirements
Prior to applying, candidates must have documented experience in the relevant sector to demonstrate the following competencies and knowledge:
- Good knowledge of the building design and construction process across all phases.
- Comprehensive experience of delivering low carbon transitions, whole life carbon assessments (WLCAs), using tools like OneClick LCA.
- Practical expertise working with certification schemes, particularly BREEAM & DREAM, alongside certification bodies in the industry.
- Experience in sustainability appraisals including those for compliance and performance assurance (e.g., SAW, SEEAM).
- Strong numerical and analytical skills, capable of interpreting data and applying it to solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical findings for various stakeholders.
- High attention to detail and critical thinking, suitable for problem-solving and strategic planning.
